Hi,

My friend has been offered a job for a conductor at LOROL and I have an interview for this role next week. I was wondering if anybody can tell me a bit the shift patterns and working patterns for LORL or general other rail companies. Do conductors generally work a pattern of 4/5 days on 3 days off or something to that extent? What are classed as bank holidays as he says this will compensate by increasing holiday entitlement at LOROL?

I just want to asses whether shift working is right for me, I know I could ask this as a question but I don’t want to seem to negative on the matter during the interview? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I suspect they are quite different than most - last place I worked had shifts all round the clock, generally 9hours long with a long 6 day weekend every 3 weeks, and two other rest days buried amonst that rolling three week cycle. Bank holidays at all train companies I've worked are lieu days, and most places, Sundays have been extra- outside the working week.

If you do not like shift systems then its no use going to a job where you can be rostered any time from 00:01hrs for 12 hours or coming to work on a sunny Saturday evening for a 11 hour job and sign on at 22:00hrs.
I had to do these sorts of shifts for 30 years.
After a while you can get used to these times as its all in a days work.
Your rosters may change frequently due to traffic requirements at your depot.
Shift patterns are catered for in the ROGS Regulations.
Also a shifts no more than 12 hour in a day, with a minimum of 12 hours+ between shifts.., and no more than 5/6 days shifts before a restday
