Why the hell was it cancelled? health & Safety executive hysteria over-riding the convenience of the Public as usual, i suppose, which is exactly the opposite of how it always used to be.

Yes, god forbid the railways should try and reduce industrial accidents. What a silly idea that is.

Nope.

Even before refurb the single-leaf crew door on the Cl315s was on the interlock circuit, as is the case with the Cl317s. I know the crew doors on Cl455s were off the interlock circuit prior to refurb because I recall seeing them running around with them open in the height of summer, but I'm not sure that is still the case.

Oh right, appears to be fairly random whether a unit does have the crew door on the interlock circuit or not. I know the crew doors on SWT 455s still aren't interlocked, not sure about Southern though.

Is there no way for the guard to prove that interlock has been gained before giving the right away? Surely that seems like the most obvious thing. If you've still got an obstruction light showing then you can't give two on the buzzer, otherwise it's meaningless.

I can only add to this as an outsider, but all of the ATW 142s have three red lights on both sides of the (internal) door control panels, which go out when doors close and lock. (I seem to remember reading that they were fitted when the units were refurbed?) Do these show interlocking / lack of it? As a lay person, it'd seem a good idea to have something like this as an internal way of knowing about the interlocking...

If a service is meant to have a guard then it cannot operate without one. I would have to assume in the particular instance quoted there was no way for the TM to catch up with his train in a short enough timescale to permit it to continue forwards and no other TM was available at Truro, so the controller elected to cancel it.

I suspect the passengers wanting to get off at intermediate stations would be just as annoyed to be taken to the end of the line (without the guard to actually open them - on most sets the doors will stay shut at stations) as they were to be chucked off it.

Many a time have I seen 150/1 drivers being buzzed before the local door has been shut. Does this happen on 455/507/508's? Are the doors ever left open while the train is in motion?

On voyagers the driver would release the doors.

I have seen it done on a Merseyrail 507/508 before with the guard having a conversation with someone on the platform (probably telling them they'd missed it!) after giving 2 on the buzzer and the train rolling. Most times, it was only brief but there was one where the train was a fair way down the platform before he shut the door. I would add though that this was a fair few years ago (early 2009 IIRC)

Pendos too I believe
