Apart from the obvious like Preston, Newcastle and Swindon, what station suprises you that all trains stop at, or most trains? Like XC trains stopping at Cheltenham or Chesterfield...

Only half the XC trains stop at Chesterfield

XC may actually make more money if they didn't stop *all* trains at Cheltenham, as it'd stop people using "split" tickets

1. Berwick doesn't get all XC
2. Berwick is a major town, is the only station for 20 miles in either Direction and only gets an hourly service for most of the day

Don't understand why XC Voyagers/HSTs stop at Tamworth and Burton on Trent when there is a half hourly local service between Birmingham and Derby.

There are some small towns which get an Intercity service simply down to the fact that they are on a main line and there is a limited/non existent local train service.

Large city???? Preston - population: 140,000 apx, lancaster: 45,000.

Connections - Preston: Blackpool, Ormskirk, Leyland, Chorley, Bolton, manchester, Blackburn, Accrington, burnley, Leeds and York.
Lancaster: Morecambe, Leeds (if your lucky), barrow.

See what I mean, also Preston has more facilities, a massive staff base, and is served by 4 TOCs.

Passenger numbers - PRE:4m; LAN: 1.64

More services go non-stop through Berwick then don't.

On the ECML all services stop at Wakefield, Leeds, York, Newcastle & Waverley (I am sure the usual person will come on and point out that East Coast don't run any services between Wakefield and York ) -

On MML we have Liecester, Derby, Nottingham and Chesterfield

On WCML we have Coventry, Birmingham international, Birmingham New Street, Stockport, Preston and Carlisle (except 1630)

On GWML, we have Reading, Swindon, Bristol Parkway, Taunton, Exeter.

Although it is debateable if they all need to.

Chesterfield - one train a day doesn't, and 1tph didnt before May.

Cov and Intl have the 1tpd non-stop (the commuter Wolves, SAD and Bhm Express), Stockport has 2XC per day non-stop.

Reading - the 0710 ex-Oxford is non-stop, and about two other trains per day, and \taunton gets some non-stopo too.

Taunton - county town of Somerset, county council could just say they would make it difficult for the traiuns to get through their county if they don't call!

Like I said, Berwick serves a huge area. It's 20 miles from Dunbar and Alnmouth, and it only recieves an hourly service by EC for most of the day.

Taunton is a surprisingly small place that all services seem to stop at.

I think there's one Southbound service which omits Taunton. Not sure exactly why all services seem to stop there; there is already an hourly local service to Bristol, as well as at least an hourly Crosscountry service. I suppose the wide catchment area for the station and the fact that going via Bristol would add huge amounts of time for passengers going to London or Reading means more services stop.

And until recently, the best answer to the question posed would have been Stockport.

Then Virgin (or Arriva XC? see, I really should just shut up sometimes) said they didnt want to stop there all the time, and someone said "But what about the agreement?". Except, nobody could actually find any agreement at all. It wasnt in the act of parliament, wasnt in any borough records, or anything. It seems it never actually existed.
So eventually a few trains started going straight through......

Considering the fact that Somerset County Council have no control over any of the railway infrastructure I think they'd be pretty hard pressed to stop services going through Zummerzet

There are 3 week day services that omit a call at Taunton, all others stop.

Wasn't saying you were dissing up Taunton, just Somerset would make it difficult for them to get through their land if they didn't (which is why so many trains call at Flint).

I heard the thing abou the viaduct. Stockport gets so many stops because it easy interchange for Crewe, Wilmslow, posh Cheshire, Buxton, Hazel grove etc, and its quieter tham Picc for a nicer connection.

No, its just that similar things happened in Flint (County town and all and the council would like it etc)

I vote for Brockenhurst pop. 3,500 and as far as I'm aware everything stops these days with 1tph on XC, although it is the changing point for the Lymington train for the Isle of Wight ferry I'm sure most people go via Southampton or Portsmouth, depending where they are coming from.

Other than that it basically serves (for XC) the towns of Lymington, New Milton a few villages and possibly some Ringwood traffic

Oh and actually Hampshire are the best county cricket club, T20 winners this year and the Friend Provident trophy last.

A couple of commuter SWT services in the morning are something like Poole, bournemouth, Soton Ctl, basingstoke and Waterloo aren't they. they go through...

I knew there used to be a couple that went straight to Bournemouth - I got caught out about 10 years or so ago when I assumed everything stopped there and I was asked for my ticket, a rather long diversion
