Apart from the obvious like Preston, Newcastle and Swindon, what station suprises you that all trains stop at, or most trains?
Like XC trains stopping at Cheltenham or Chesterfield...

Only half the XC trains stop at Chesterfield
XC may actually make more money if they didn't stop *all* trains at Cheltenham, as it'd stop people using "split" tickets![]()
Ok, Berwick too, why do so many trains call there? Wakefield WG too![]()
I don't understand why Preston is compulsory stop yet Lancaster isn't, Lancaster's more important as a large city.
Anyway, Stockport.

Do believe Preston is Virgin Trains' crew change point?

More services go non-stop through Berwick then don't.
On the ECML all services stop at Wakefield, Leeds, York, Newcastle & Waverley (I am sure the usual person will come on and point out that East Coast don't run any services between Wakefield and York) -
On MML we have Liecester, Derby, Nottingham and Chesterfield
On WCML we have Coventry, Birmingham international, Birmingham New Street, Stockport, Preston and Carlisle (except 1630)
On GWML, we have Reading, Swindon, Bristol Parkway, Taunton, Exeter.
Although it is debateable if they all need to.
Taunton is a surprisingly small place that all services seem to stop at.
And until recently, the best answer to the question posed would have been Stockport.
Like I said, Berwick serves a huge area. It's 20 miles from Dunbar and Alnmouth, and it only recieves an hourly service by EC for most of the day.Re: Berwick, yeah, but it always seems to get more stops than Alnmouth (serving Alnwick and its castle and tourit coast), but I suppose it is more 'important'. Quietest First Class Lounge in GB at Berwick?
I think there's one Southbound service which omits Taunton. Not sure exactly why all services seem to stop there; there is already an hourly local service to Bristol, as well as at least an hourly Crosscountry service. I suppose the wide catchment area for the station and the fact that going via Bristol would add huge amounts of time for passengers going to London or Reading means more services stop.Taunton is a surprisingly small place that all services seem to stop at.
I believe XC's 2tph service to Stockport was reinstated in May of last year, having only been withdrawn in December. And until recently, the best answer to the question posed would have been Stockport.
Taunton - county town of Somerset, county council could just say they would make it difficult for the traiuns to get through their county if they don't call!
Stockport - can you explain, soory dont understand your wording
There was this thing that anything using the viaduct at Stockport (ie all trains ex-Manc) must call because the viaduct was sooooooo gooooood![]()

Cov and Intl have the 1tpd non-stop (the commuter Wolves, SAD and Bhm Express)

Sorry, not trying to denigrate Taunton, home of the greatest county cricket side in the country, but it is surprising that all XC and all-but-one FGW services stop there.

As for Stockport, as I understand it (Im sure someone will correct me in a few minutes), all trains had to stop there due to an agreement that was made when the viaduct was first built. Then Virgin (or Arriva XC? see, I really should just shut up sometimes) said they didnt want to stop there all the time, and someone said "But what about the agreement?". Except, nobody could actually find any agreement at all. It wasnt in the act of parliament, wasnt in any borough records, or anything. It seems it never actually existed.
So eventually a few trains started going straight through......
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
OK. Then the answer to the original question is actually Stockport. No need for all those trains to stop in some south Manchester council estate.....
And any W&S services which run non stop through Cov and Intl
Do you mean the 0730 VT service which is BHM-EUS non stop (so runs through Cov & Intl)?
Considering the fact that Somerset County Council have no control over any of the railway infrastructure I think they'd be pretty hard pressed to stop services going through Zummerzet![]()

home of the greatest county cricket side in the country
But they have yet to actually win a county championship![]()
I vote for Brockenhurst pop. 3,500 and as far as I'm aware everything stops these days with 1tph on XC, although it is the changing point for the Lymington train for the Isle of Wight ferry I'm sure most people go via Southampton or Portsmouth, depending where they are coming from.
Other than that it basically serves (for XC) the towns of Lymington, New Milton a few villages and possibly some Ringwood traffic
Brockenhurst:
In the peak when 10 444s divide/join at Southampton Cntrl the front five are non-stop to Bournemouth (except the 1435 & 1535) and rear sections are all stations to Poole (except Redbridge and the other one)

and this year theyre going to be runners up in everything...

Weymouth, Some stops, Poole, Bournemouth, Southampton (joins to stopper from Poole), Soton Airport, Winchester, London![]()
Stoke on Trent.
WSMR stopping at Cosford... I can sort of understand it, but wish it didn't!
