A quiet worrying tale, we have enough issues around stations without the press whipping up new stories about a minority of idiots.

The context of the story makes it much worse in that it reads as if other like minded individuals find this funny, when the comments on the youtube videos are so heavily censored, that any criticism of these individuals behavior is simply deleted or never published.

We all know these guys are idiots who bring a bad name to us all but half of northern england may now agree

For a start, that wasn't the first time they have done something like that. Every time they go out to film trains, they behave recklessly and irresponsibly. (sp?)

Despite numerous promises that they will improve their act, they don't.

Imagine it from a drivers view point. You see several people pratting around at the edge of the platform as your approaching at high speed. O L Leigh has been involved in a fatality, Kestral drives along the worst part of the railways for suicides on a daily basis. Ask them what goes through their minds when they see someone stood on the edge of the platform ....

I will tell you... Sarcasm is a pathetic attempt at wit.

As far as i know, there is no law stating it is illegal, not even civil. You are 'asked' to stand behind the yellow line, but as you can see, network rail spokesmen seemed as if they didnt have much pro-involvment to say on the matter. All that could be done is a verbal slap on the wrists.

Although i see it from the drivers point of view, I wouldnt start twining at people if i seen them doing it, after all, these guys are enjoying them selves, and the danger risk isnt that high, although people are like 'wow' and 'epic' Its just the same as standing at the side of fast road. I can understand people if they think this post is irresponsible, as if probably is, but to be quite frank, i couldnt care less.

You obviously really hate these guys, i wonder if it is only because of this...

So presumably you wouldn't blame them when, because of their behaviour, Network Rail or TOCs decided to refuse to allow rail enthusiasts on station platforms.

Demps are you retarded or something?

These idiots are making complete prats of themselves and standing FAR too close to the edge of the platforms, the yellow line is there so passengers stay back from the edge at a safe distance so they don't get sucked under/along by the turbulance created by passing high speed trains. Surely your limited intelligence tells you this?? Passengers are not asked, the line is there for that reason I stated above.

One of these days one or more of them will be hit by a passing train, and it will be their own fault. Now you can call us "women" for debating/flaming/whatever it but at the end of the day it is in our best interests that these incidents don't happen again or we won't have much of a hobby left.

Calling waving frantically and jumping about on the edge of platforms in the hope to catch horn-blasts "fun", is almost akin to condoning it.

I hope that comment was tongue in cheek!

"Excuse me sir, before you enter this station, I have to ask you some questions... Have you ever frothed over a "2 tone"? Do you prefer 37s or HSTs? I'm sorry, you looked like you understood that last question, I cannot allow you access"... :p

Having said that, I agree with your point that it is not acceptable...

I'm sure if they were stood on a motorway verge, or trunk road verge doing the same, the Police would pay them a wee visit......

No, but the Police would probably move you on, because they may be concerned that you were posing a risk to yourself, or others due to i) suicidal intent, ii) terrorist intent, iii)impersonating a speed reduction partnership operative, iv) behaving in a way likely to distract road users.

All of which are used fairly frequently by the Police to move people who are gathering at a road side.

The Police try to defuse situations before some commits an act which is illegal. Thus just because what you are doing is legal, does not make it safe, or stop the Police from asking you to stop doing it.

For crying out loud, how old are you lot on here.

Once again the northern echo has blown something totaly out of proportion, again.

Cant belive some of you are actualy flaming this, i know this thing shouldnt be condoned, but , your like old women..

I AM! an old woman, I also enjoy standing at Northallerton and Thirsk stations, Not only was I stood beheind the yellow line I was twice the distance behind the yellow line, and I still had to hold on to the fence! This isn't blowing it out of proportion, how would you like it if somone said, don't blow it out of proportion, if you or somone you love does this then they get sucked in between the carrages and being spread over 30miles of railway before the train stops at darlington!

It's all well and good for Smarshthelegend to say he doesn't condone the irresponsible behaviour of those in his videos but he was perhaps a bit foolish to let himself get into this position with the Northern Echo story.

It is hardly surprising that people might come to the conclusion that he was involved when he obviously stood with the group filming them, something which would no doubt provide further encouragement for them to mess about.

Rather than trying to distance himself from these people now, he should have physically done so at the station. He should have simply come to the conclusion that it wouldn't be a good idea to go filming with them. If the BTP turned up I suspect he'd have found himself labelled as being amongst the group.

I suggest he should try to be more sensible and not put himself at risk of accusations when there is no need. If he really wants to film at Northerallerton but idiots are about then he'll find a foot crossing on the ECML north of the station about 20 minutes or so walk away.

Some on other sites are suggesting that some involved work for a TOC whose trains run through that station and who may take a dim view of that kind of behaviour, especially as they are looking to get rid of a few staff just now,.....

I saw a few of the youtube videos and don't know how anyone can get THAT excited. It's not as if the ghost of Dr Beeching were flying past on a flaming Pacer as the start of the trainpocalypse.<(

To stand right on the edge of the platform wearing red as I saw in one of the videos is just stupid and dangerous though.

As far as i know, there is no law stating it is illegal, not even civil.

Really, I know of several H&S laws, conduct laws and railway by-laws?

Here is a simplified version of them regarding conduct for railway by-laws.

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/rail/legislation/regs/railwaysbyelaws

6. Unacceptable behaviour

(1) No person shall use any threatening, abusive, obscene or offensive language on the railway.

(2) No person shall behave in a disorderly, indecent or offensive manner on the railway.

Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994

Offence of causing intentional harassment, alarm or distress

In Part I of the [1986 c. 64.] Public Order Act 1986 (offences relating to public order), after section 4, there shall be inserted the following section—
“4A Intentional harassment, alarm or distress

(1) A person is guilty of an offence if, with intent to cause a person harassment, alarm or distress, he—

(a) uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, or

(b) displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting,

thereby causing that or another person harassment, alarm or distress.

(2) An offence under this section may be committed in a public or a private place, except that no offence is committed where the words or behaviour are used, or the writing, sign or other visible representation is displayed, by a person inside a dwelling and the person who is harassed, alarmed or distressed is also inside that or another dwelling.

(3) It is a defence for the accused to prove—

(a) that he was inside a dwelling and had no reason to believe that the words or behaviour used, or the writing, sign or other visible representation displayed, would be heard or seen by a person outside that or any other dwelling, or

(b) that his conduct was reasonable.

(4) A constable may arrest without warrant anyone he reasonably suspects is committing an offence under this section.

(5) A person guilty of an offence under this section is liable on summary conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale or both.”.

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/acts/acts1994/ukpga_19940033_en_17#pt12-pb3-l1g154

and some more laws

ENDANGERING SAFETY

There are two levels of offence within the Offences Against the Person Act of 1861. Both relate to an act or omission which causes the safety of persons using or working on the railway to be endangered.

If committed by neglect it is punishable by a maximum of 2 years imprisonment.
If committed with intent the maximum penalty is life imprisonment.

If they have a gentleman in a position of trust (registered with a recognised union, or registered as a profetional mentioned in secion 121 of the mental heath act) they can demand them to be sectioned ;)

I suspect someone is looking at what they can be had up for now. Posting a video up on you tube committing stupid and criminal acts is pretty much the most stupid thing anyone can do.

The 2007 new ammendments make it much much harder to achieve sadly, and have to be ratified in court failry soon afterwards. And the Scottish restrictions are even tighter than the English/Welsh ones.

Sadly, some staff abused the old regulations, so the newer ones were made much tighter and has an entire government agency to monitor it..........

In the cab with the paper
I'm a little surprised and disappointed by the "what-harm-are-they-doing-it's-only-a-bit-of-fun" arguments. As the Nitwit Rail spokesperson told the Northern Echo, the yellow line is there as a safety measure because people are killed by being dragged off the platform by the turbulence caused by a passing train.

It's bad enough going through platforms at 80mph when there are folks with their toes on the edge, so I can only imagine what the feeling must be like at 125mph. If someone was titting around like that in front of my train, whistling up would be just the start of it. If I felt the person was being particularly foolish I'd be calling it in to the signaller as a near miss and requesting the police attend to eject the culprit(s) from railway property.

I'm sorry if this seems harsh, but that's the way I feel about it. I appreciate that actions such as this are not illegal, but the railway is still private property. Unless you are there with a ticket to travel and are either on a train or waiting for a train, you are trespassing, which is illegal. (Equally a driver may believe that you are trying to commit suicide, which is also an illegal act.) The only exception to that seems to be rail enthusiasts who are allowed to be there by the good grace of the local staff and for no other reason. If the station supervisor catches you fooling around and putting yourself and others at risk, you will be asked to leave and you will be required to do so. Why spoil it for yourselves and others?

Agree totally with what you say there fella. Next thing will be H&S/ notwork fail imposing a blanket speed of 25mph through stations.

It's alright for some people to say it's harmless but try being in that cab when it happens, at best it's an unneeded distraction to the driver. My heart has missed many a beat with idiots on stations. Had a spate of people between Man Picc & Crewe who think it's funny to run towards the edge of the platform & pretend to jump................. Yeah really funny that:? Trying to compose yourself & get back to concentrating on what you are doing can be hard if you've just braced yourself for the thud off the front of your train. Who says in that time a speed restriction, braking point or even signal sequence could be missed resulting in nothing very good.

If the're filming that is iligal because of the terrorism act...

Just read it and filming land intended for public transportation is an offense under the terriorism act for which they can be charged and sent down, by CCTV, albeit only a 28 day detention order, it would make them think twice about doing it next time if they did it.

Similarly looking as though you're going to jump infront of a train may also be construded as an offence by forcing the driver to perform emergency procedures which are in themselves dangerous, it is endengering that life of the driver and all persons onboard that train. Therefore an offense.

It is also iligal under the highways act and even the special roads act to perform hand signals at any peron(s) on a road or perminant way ;) That carries an unlimited fine and 2 years :D

There are many diferent things you could get this bunch of idiots done for, the easyest would be to do them under the terrorism act for filming in an un-autherised location without a permit, as this endangers the security considerations of the station land and the perminant way.
