Compensation for a ticket versus journey

Following from the other thread where XC say that separate tickets are separate contracts, looking at the NRCoC, this does appear to be the case, at least for compensation:

General start bit about "you can"
Claim compensation if your arrival at the station on your ticket is delayed by...

and item 43.b specifically
if you arrive more than 60 minutes late at your destination station
It depends what they mean by "destination station"? If it's the station on the ticket then they could just refund depending on the delay of the leg. But if it's the end of the journey that's a different matter.

Appendix A has definitions, but there isn't one for what a "destination station" is. To me it'd be reasonable to assume it's where you're getting off, but it could just as easily be argued that it's where-ever the specific ticket says.

This is actually important because it varies compensation in some cases. Consider:

Code:
Train A is delayed 30 minutes getting to station S.
Train B was a 45 minute transfer, so was easily caught (15 mins to spare).

In the above scenario, a split ticket (at least if it named Station S) would get a refund, but a single ticket wouldn't.

But then what starts happening if I split the ticket in the middle of the delayed journey?

Code:
Train Q is delayed 30 minutes by the time it gets to Station X, but by 1hr when it gets to the final destination of Station Y.
Would you get a 30min compensation for the first part and a 60 minute for the second if you had a split ticket? But the full 60 minute affair for a single-ticket?
And if there was a train before that (Train P) that wasn't delayed and you had a separate ticket for, would you get no refund for that portion?

What are the expect opinions on this?

You may use two or more tickets for one journey.

Clearly the destination is wherever you are travelling to on your journey.

It is true that XC have a history of denying this, however they are wrong. I recall a senior XC manager told a newspaper this a year or two ago, and a lot of people contacted XC to remonstrate, and XC eventually relented.

But the NRCoC compensation section doesn't talk about journeys, but destination stations. And the first section (quoted above) is explicitly clear that it is only for the ticketed station.

The compensation is not being awarded under the NRCoC compensation section, it is being awarded under Delay Repay, which uses the term Journey, not ticket.

... which also uses the term "ticket" and not "tickets".

Far from a clear cut situation.

I've submitted delay repay claims of over 2 hours to XC on two occasions using two tickets. On both they've happily paid out the total value without quibble.

Experiences can be highly variable and the result can depend on who it is that processed your claim.

This is not only the case with XC. It is the same with EC, with EMT, with Southern, etc.
