If you were delayed by a suitable amount of time you can claim compensation based on this. You should also be able to claim compensation according to their passenger charter with regards to the difference in fare between 1st and standard class.

It wasn’t delayed but cancelled, am I still entitled to compensation?
Although the train was cancelled, alternative transport (a rail replacement bus) was provided, so you may claim compensation for the delay to your journey, and also the difference paid between 1st class and the equivalent Std class fare for the journey you made.

In order to tell you if you are entitled to compensation, what time should the train have arrived at your destination if it had have been on time? What time did the rail replacement bus arrive at your destination (hopefully you noted the exact time)? Also, did you hold a single or a return ticket?

It was two single tickets. I was thinking of compensation along the lines of not being provided with a 1st class service.
You are indeed entitled to compensation for this - the difference between the cost of your first class tickets and the equivalent standard tickets - in addition to compensation for the delay in line with the normal 'Delay Repay' scheme principles.

By having to get the rail replacement bus rather then the train though, how much later did this cause you to arrive at your destination?

I paid for first class on the train so that is what I expected. The first section of my journey was also an a clapped out old train with no first class, so surely I should also be compensated for that?

How do I claim for the difference between the two fares?

I’m just a bit annoyed with the journey tonight. I don’t feel that I should accept this quality of service.

Was the first train one that was scheduled to have first class at the point you booked?

You can put in a claim for delay compensation and for the difference between first and standard to the TOC (Greater Anglia). You may wish to send in an email.

I don’t know. My ticket has first class on it though.
What time train was it that you were scheduled to take? It is possible on a number of routes to buy a first class ticket despite some or all services not having first class. You only have an entitlement to the difference where the service was originally scheduled to have first class.

Are you wanting to get a refund for an overall delay too or just the difference between STD and 1st class?

To do latter the train you intended on travel on would have to be advertised as having 1st class in the timetable. To do the former then you would need to say by how long you were delayed (if at all) to see if it was for long enough to qualify.

I'm waiting for the day a TOC to lay on 2 RRBs - a clapped out one for Standard class ticket holders, and a luxury coach for 1st class ticket holders.

In order to be entitled to a refund of the difference between 1st and Standard class fares, the journey must have been advertised as having 1st Class in the timetable. That said, even if the rail replacement bus was advertised when you bought your ticket, it is quite likely that Greater Anglia will refund the difference as a gesture of goodwill if you write to their customer services address, noting the details of the service and enclose the ticket.

How do I find out if First Class is offered? I am going to assume not, based on experience.

Please provide the time of train you intended to take (even if one was not 'booked' - what time you turned up at the station should be enough to work out what service you should've been on). It is also important to know what time you arrived at your destination or no compensation claim for delay can be processed (as how will they know what they delay was?).

If the RRB was advertised when you bought your ticket then you will not be compensated for arriving at the train timetabled time.

It was rather chaotic to say the least, with GA having overhead wiring problems I believe, followed by a tree down on the GN side. GA secured almost every bus in the area, leaving many thousands of people stuck on the GN side.

When things get to such a high level of disruption, you have to begin to consider abandoning your journey (I think advice was to not travel unless absolutely necessary) and of course you'd be entitled to a full refund, or maybe to travel on another day.

If you opted to travel anyway, you'd get the delay repay as appropriate based on the scheduled arrival time and your actual arrival time. Obviously you'd be able to claim back the first class element if you ended up on a bus.

If you'd booked a first class ticket and the train didn't have first class, that's not really the fault of the train company unless it was meant to have it. That would be shown in the timetable.

All Cambridge to London Liverpool Street trains convey First Class accommodation.

I am not sure what rolling stock could possibly be provided that does not actually have First Class, though? Presumably you travelled on a '317'.

317s have first class. It's pretty rubbish on a lot of them, but it has it. And by having it - whatever the quality - you'd certainly not be able to claim any money back for that aspect. Just the delay, which if long enough might mean 100% of the ticket price back anyway.

The only exception would be if the train was declassified, but if you'd get 100% of the ticket back through delay repay then it doesn't matter anyway.

You were due to arrive at 1827. What time did you actually arrive at Stansted Airport?

If this were your experience... why book a First Class ticket?

I was booked on the 15:35 from Norwich to Cambridge too. It is listed as having First Class but I don’t think i’ve ever seen 1st class on that.

And there certainly wasn’t 1st class on the clapped out train we were on.The conductor said so anyway.

Yes it was pathetic.

I wasn’t going to abandon my journey, I had a flight to catch.

All trains on this route convey First Class accommodation. It would be fairly unlikely for any rolling stock that doesn't have it to go this way but not impossible.

That's funny because although all trains on from Cambridge to London Liverpool Street do have First Class, none of thrm have conductors.

You've been asked three times now what time you actually arrived. Since you seem either not to know, or to be unwilling to say for some reason, I would suggest we can be of no further help.

This thread is about a journey from Cambridge to Statsed Airport via Bishops Stortford. Unfortunately, the OP, after many attempts, has chosen not to provide the necessary information to allow us to give good advice. Any questions over a completely separate journey with a completely different problem then should go in a new thread.

I’m sorry but if you’re not prepared to give me an answer and are just being pedantic because you don’t like the sound of me claiming money leave the thread, you aren’t any help to me.

I’ll always claim money when i’m not provided with the service I paid for. That’s that.

Despite making 10 posts in this thread we still cannot say if you're eligible for Delay Repay or not, because you've decided not to tell us what time you arrived regardless of how many times you are asked.

Furthermore there is no evidence of what happened on your train from Cambridge to Bishops Stortford that could lead to a claim. Were you delayed? All trains on that route have First Class. It is very very little different to Standard Class, except that it says First Class on it. It is easy to miss.

As has already been established here, you are entitled to the difference between First and Standard for Bishops Stortford and Stansted Airport. This is only £4.10, however. I thought you could easily have been rightly entitled to much more, probably all of your ticket price back. But who knows.

You did, for some reason, start talking about an unrelated journey and how anyone at GA should know all about that but there is no clarity as to how that's relevant.
