Let's be honest here, no-one has to watch Jeremy Kyle but if ITV axe the show then the potential fare evaders aren't sat in the studio audience when the show is being filmed so are more likely to be on a train evading fares.

I think that generally depends on where you live. Armed with an Oyster card in London gives you very cheap train travel over short distances. However outside of our metropolitan area's I concur that short journeys can be expensive.

I can name a few that can be made cheaper by buying a ticket valid for more than twice the distance, and furthermore, because they are via London, you can't get caught on the 'stopping short' criterion.

Indeed. In a fairly recent experience, a off-peak return from Singer to North Queensferry would have cost me £24.80 without it being split. However, the ticket woman at Singer recommended that I split the journey into three legs (Singer to Glasgow Queen Street, Queen Street to Haymarket & Haymarket to North Queensferry), thus reducing the cost to £21.96 & saving me £2.84. Not much of a saving, but a saving nonetheless.

I can name a few that can be made cheaper by buying a ticket valid for more than twice the distance, and furthermore, because they are via London, you can't get caught on the 'stopping short' criterion.

I can name a few which can be legally made over 6 times cheaper by buying a ticket for a journey that's over 3 times shorter and about 100 miles away.

Off-peak you can get from one side of Greater Manchester to the other side (up to around 30 miles) for around £4 return. If I want to go to Delamere Forest by train (about 15 miles away from me on a direct route) I'd have to pay around double that for half the distance - and there's around a 80% chance you'd get a Pacer in at least one direction.

Train drivers must be sat down to drive a train, any not sat down are dangerous and it is infringing the rules in some peculiar way.

Add to this that all fares on the Northern network are stupidly cheap and that completely justifies the old stock. Simply not true, at least outside of PTE areas.

I get what you're saying here but of course, some don't take numbers and many younger fans of the hobby certainly tend not to like the stigma of the 'platform end'. Personally, on the other hand, I really couldn't care less what people think or what stigmas the hobby brings.

I've never made a point of hiding what I do because that's just what ammunition people need to make mindless comments about me being 'sad' etc. Being open about the hobby isn't such a bad thing, after all, people are willing to learn about trains and I'm certainly willing to learn about other people's interests. I went Notts with a friend of mine last Wednesday and I've never seen someone look so scared as when I dropped the door window to get some cool air in!

I digress, I visit Nuneaton station every Monday night- my friends are well aware of this and know that I don't like being disturbed during this time, I take numbers of locos, all units and wagons and photograph anything and everything. I'm 17, been into the hobby for 3 years now and I absolutely love the various trips that I go on and opportunities to meet different people.

Perhaps I've gone off topic a bit but I get really irritated by those who keep their hobby secret because 'people don't accept it'- well bloody well make them and you tend to find that people know the difference between Freightliner and Shenker or an 86 and a 66 faster than you can say 'I like trains.'

In other news I'm a massive geek for Roger Moore and Michael Caine films as well as James Bond and classic cars.

Time to calm down!
