DSG have some strong income from their overseas operations though

Do they? I thought they weren't doing well abroad.. although that was only based on my own observation that they have been closing a fair few of their El Giganten/PC City stores in Sweden - so that's not exactly representative of their entire foreign operations!

Sweden seems to still have a lot of electrical retailers, although I don't know if the others are all owned by the same company.

Maybe we'll start seeing some decent clearance sales now!

I expect if a deal is done to buy the name and continue the online side, there will be less discounts and more stock going back to the warehouses.

If I was going to buy the company and keep selling goods online, I'd be wanting to acquire all the stock in the shops - not see it given away cheap.

Of course, I don't know how the business is set up - maybe the shops and the online side are separate entities.

I'll be honest, I didn't read the entire article, just saw the headline and assumed Comet would be no more, didn't realize there were plans for an online business.

It's the way things seem to be done now, let a good business go under, buy the name and stock cheap and resurrect it as an online entity. Everyone's a winner oh except loyal staff and customers.

The Falkirk Store is well and truly history - we are hoping it reopens with a different sort of "laps"

Hopefully, the first sales were shocking, £5 and £10 off some heftly priced items when I went.

Anyway, hopefully we in the decent shop desert of Burton, might be getting a PC world that isn't 2 miles out of town :D

Yesterday I got a 50% off everything email from Comet:

An Acer laptop with 8GB ram and 750GB hard drive running Windows 8 didn't seem bad at £225!

Assuming they have any!

Yes, it specifically cited washing machines and fridge freezers. No reference to TVs though!

Oh, did we start of discussing astronomy then? :p

Being somewhat the forum member version of "Old Moore's Almanac", I must confess that when I first saw this thread upon the forum, after the news of the event, I did think it was worth checking if this indeed was the "Comet crashing on Earth" that had been predicted eons ago in some medieval writings, even then going as far as to study if the prophecies of Nostradamus had covered this event..:D

Looks like The Government is going to have to stump up £Millions to help with the Staff Redundancy Payments and potential loss of VAT

Yup, and there are now questions about some of the finances - as well as the fact that the owners are secure creditors and will actually get paid out ahead of everyone else.

Sounds familiar though. Wasn't this similar to the group of people who took over Rover, or the many changes of one of the high-street sport shops (JJB or JD or whoever)?

To be fair as I understand it they will still lose in the region of £95 Million :p
