Collecting ticket booked on Trainline

I had occasion to book a ticket on Trainline from my mobile phone when I was away from home. I paid using Apple Pay.

There was no mobile ticket available.

When I got to the station the machine wouldn't release the ticket as I had forgotten my credit card!

Is there a way round this until all tickets are mobile?

If I recall correctly, paying with Apple Pay sets the transaction to "any card" collection (as the retailer doesn’t know the card details to enforce "same card" collection) allowing you to pick up the tickets with any credit/debit card. If you don’t have one on you and there is a staffed ticket office, you can also collect it from there.

Unfortunately, it has always been a requirement to produce a physical card to collect tickets from ticket machines, even if not necessarily the one used. Only in recent years have some operators' TVMs began accepting contactless payment methods for this purpose, but it's still quite niche.

Whilst a ticket office would likely be able to help print the ticket for you, if there isn't one at the station but the ticket machine is otherwise working normally, you'd be obliged to go ahead and use the machine to buy a new ticket. Otherwise you could be forced to buy an undiscounted Anytime single to the next stop (and then a new ticket from there if you want to continue your journey), or issued a Penalty Fare, or in the worst case scenario prosecuted.

Will the TVM work by inserting other cards of the same size which are not bank cards, for example, Oyster cards, royalty cards, an old railway ticket, or even playing cards, if it is set to any card collection?

Oyster cards, tickets, playing cards - I seriously doubt any of them would work.
Loyalty cards might because they have card numbers, but I wouldn't be surprised if the card number is rejected as invalid.

Unfortunately this is not the case for all TVM's...
I can think of 2 of the back of my head where this isn't the case (Avanti & C2C)

LNER’s TVMs allow contactless to be used, as do a few other TOCs (Chiltern is one I think), but the vast majority don’t.

Rail tickets and playing cards would be too thin to work. An Oyster card might do but I would think a card with a credit card style magnetic strip should work. I can't comment on royalty cards though, I'm too low in status for those!!

I searched the forum for mentions of "Clubcard" and "Nectar card" and found various reports of success, mostly at unspecified times in the past, so I've bolded the "current" (at the time) ones:

Jun 2017: "I can even use my Nectar card", "I've collected tickets with my wife's Nectar card for a booking in my name", "I have know some use a TESCO loyalty card, and even a hotel key card",
Nov 2017: "The name on my nectar card is completely unrelated to my actual name and I did use it to collect a train ticket a few years ago.", "I have seen tickets collected with a nectar.", "I've personally collected tickets with a Nectar card too.", "Back in the day, I often used a Tesco Ireland Clubcard."
Jun 2019: "Just collected said tickets using one of the TVM’s at Chester. I was able to collect them using my Tesco Clubcard!"

Obviously mileage will vary due to the different types of Ticket Vending Machine in existence.

Yep - attempted to pick up a ticket summer 2022 set to any card collection on a SWR Scheidt & Bachmann (S&B) ticket machine using a Nectar card, didn’t work.

Given OP’s location, I could try it on a Southern S&B ticket machine next time I have cause to buy a train ticket but I think the result will probably be the same…

Just on this thread, I want to purchase a ticket for my friend to pick up. Can my friend inset their bank card and collect the tickets even though my card (paid online using actual card payment method, not google/apple pay) was used for the purchase or does it have to be, as TOCs suggest, the card used for the purchase, must be used to collect the tickets. I don't want to buy a ticket for my friend and then them have to pay for another ticket because they can't collect the ticket that I bought them. As it would be bought on my account as well, it would be linked back to my name (if that causes any issues. a Mr Jones bought the tickets and Mr Johnson is picking them up with his card).

I am purchasing through LNER and pick up would be from a TFW station if that makes any difference.

Same card with LNER for Credit/Debit Card ToDs, are eTickets not available?

LNER are unble to change the setting of same card collection made at the time of booking.

Given that Apple Pay doesn't give a card number as such, isn't it just "any card" if you pay that way? It is for PayPal. Google Pay by contrast does give the merchant the card number.

I am not sure what "airtime rewards" are but I have had cashback from my bank (Halifax) pay out successfully on the purchase of LNER e-vouchers in the past.

Edit: I have read up on “airtime rewards” and I see no reason why they would not accrue on the purchase of LNER e-vouchers.

You need to look at what the retailer tells you when you book. If they tell you that you need to produce the card used when booking, then this will not be suitable for what you need.

There are plenty of retailers that will allow you to receive tickets via ToD without it being "same card collection". So unless you have a particular reason for buying through LNER, I would book elsewhere.

Or LNER could hurry up and start any card collection like 3rd party retailers have. Hopefully as it's in the pipeline, that is a good thing. Maybe one day I will be able to make it work

Airtime rewards, they are the only TOC offering 5% cashback.
