Thinking about this one. Does anybody know the pay scales? Advert just says the usual £ competitive. Noted company pension, so no final salary scheme then and presume its a sliding scale of repayable fees if u leave early etc. anybody got more info?

Can anyone advise where the crew depots are for Colas? Some research online suggests that zero hour contract drivers book on from home, but I can't find much about their driver depot locations. LB

Doesn't seem to be any questions or anything in the application form. You just upload your CV - that caught me off guard! Almost like I accidentally applied for it, I just thought I was at the registration part of the process!

Thank you for the heads up with this.

Just put in my application. A lot easier compared to the other operators I have applied for

Just applied, I think.

I entered in all my details and such but no actual confirmation that I've applied for the job. It seems to me like what I did was submit a speculative application.

Attaching a CV doesn't seem the norm to me considering other jobs I've applied for.

I thought the application process would be more thorough. Sent my CV in. Just got to sit back and wait.

Down the Line!
Wow, that was so different to any other application I have ever done for this sort of position!

Like others have said, sent in the CV, just have to sit back and hope now! :)

This is a first! Normally this company is qualified only and asks for freight drivers only.

Perhaps they've run out of redundant qualified drivers from large FOC's that were prepared to accept zero conditions and zero hour contracts rather than dole money...

Sometimes companies have to advertise their vacancies outside the railway domain to try to prove that they are creating jobs and not just maintaining jobs.

I am in awe very unusual for colas to advertise trainee drivers. I read on the train driver org website that this was zero hours. can't confirm anything though as I have not even read the job description.

Colas Rail Freight operate freight trains throughout the UK and require trainee train drivers for their expanding rail freight business in the South East and the West Country. Candidates need to be educated to GCSE level or a qualification in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. You must be over 21, reliable, self-motivated, punctual, happy to work shifts - including weekend, demonstrate good levels of concentration whist working alone, customer focused, flexible, demonstrate a willingness to get the job done safely and on time.
The first stage of short listed applicants will be required to undertake and pass a psychometric test, a full train drivers medical, including eye sight, hearing, drugs & alcohol tests.
Once training is completed after a period of 6 – 12 months, we will offer a highly competitive salary and company pension scheme plus a job with lots of variety.

Received a phone call this morning from Colas asking to me to attend for psychometric tests. Really chuffed as after about 5 or 6 trainee driver applications with other TOC's and FOC's I've finally got over the first hurdle!!!

I have also received a telephone call today re the psychometric tests which is encouraging, however like many others have mentioned, there is a great lack of information regarding whats on offer from point of view of hours and salary.
I have also read traindriver.org who mention zero hours contracts, which is not an attractive proposition.
Apparently they are sending out emails with further details to those invited to testing. Hopefully more information will be held within said email. This remains to be seen......

I have not done any of the Psychometric test's so it will be a new experience for me.

Anyway I have not received another email from Colas yet although I do hope I will get one in the next hour or two or perhaps sometime tommorow. Seems they are only inviting a very limited number.

Have you not passed 1st stage at FGW? You shouldn't have to sit those parts again

Yes I thought about that so I have emailed Colas explaining this.

To the poster who asked me about relocating, I can say if I am offered this I will be relocating. It is pretty easy for me as I am living with my parents at the moment and my fiat punto has finally been repaired so I can easily move my stuff
