Now -- there was temporarily a station in Stamford, east of the still-open Midland station and at a junction between Great Northern and Midland metals. Does it count, or doesn't it? I'll guess that it does --Stamford (Water Street)

Is that not the same as the Stamford East terminal station which was situated in Water Street?

I was in rather a hurry, to go out on what proved an aborted errand -- back home now, with leisure. Was going purely by Dewick's Complete Atlas of Railway Station Names, which aims at admirable thoroughness, but tends to raise more than a few chimeras. Dewick shows "Stamford East / GN" as a separate terminal station for the Essendine and Wansford lines; plus a connecting line between GNR and MR, diverging from GNR routes a little way east of the GNR terminus, and joining with the MR Syston -- Peterborough line at his supposed "temporary Water Street" station, on the Midland line a bit east of the current station. Have looked up Wiki, and also alternative"paper" sources -- all confirm the layout of tracks / routes as above, but make no mention of Dewick's putative "temporary Water Street" sta. -- and they do give Water Street as an alternative name to "East", for the GNR lines' terminal station. Moral -- in future, try always to check Mr. Dewick's tome against other sources.

Two questions here. One - does this station count? (the MR station next to it is obviously still open). Two - where was the original LNWR station? It was evidently relocated in 1885, but the oldest map I can find at present is dated 1886!

It has always been recognised on this quiz that the Rugby and Stamford Railway is the only one where the LNWR station at Market Harborough, opened in 1850, is allowable as a posting submission. The LNWR station was always in the same location. The Midland Railway shared the LNWR station from 1857 to 1884, when a new Midland Railway station was opened on its new line.

Note - I think we would have passed through the second site of Blisworth station (1853 to 1960) as well as the first.

Looking at the learned man's book again -- yes ! I'll admit, these "first and second" stations totally do my head in.

North End -- pipped-at !
