I think there were two Pontygwaith Halts (or platforms) one on the TVR and one on the line we are traversing.

FURTHER INFORMATION

If you look at the RAILSCOT line diagram on the Quakers Yard and Merthyr Joint Railway, there is a "closed stop symbol" with no station name but just a question mark that appears to be between the stations of Quakers Yard High Level and of Aberfan. Could that one be the Pontygwaith Halt on that line?

I hadn't spotted that but yes, it seems likely. The evidence I can find is:

1) "Halt" marked on OS 1:25000 map (about 1937) at Pont y Gwaith between Quakers Yard and Aberfan
2) Two "Pontygwaith" halts/stations listed in Wikipedia "List of Closed Stations"
3) Included in Wignall's Gazetteer (1981)
4) Shown on "railmaponline"
