One source suggests that there was a first station at Chichester somewhere east of the current station, but I can't find any further evidence for it. Any information would be interesting as it's not far from my local area.

There was a terminal Chichester station on the line of the West Sussex Railway.

Yes, I am aware of that one. This looks like something different. My guess is that it was a temporary terminus of the Brighton & Chichester Railway, but it needs more research. This source is not always reliable (although sometimes coming up with material not covered elsewhere).

Noting in passing Aldrington that the original station of Dyke Junction Halt (1905 - 1932) was about 150 yd west of the modern station, as shown clearly on the relevant OS maps.

I think that you will find that particular station is normally regarded as being on the line of the Brighton and Dyke Railway.

I think that you will find that (Dyke Junction) is normally regarded as being on the line of the Brighton and Dyke Railway.

The platforms were certainly on the main line, just east of the junction.

My information shows that Dyke Junction Halt was renamed Aldrington Halt in 1932. The platforms were rebuilt by the Southern Railway in the 1930s. I am unaware that was resited.


There was a temporary station named Northam Road (1839-1840) north of the later Northam station which I put forward as discussion whether it should be included in the quiz on the route between the present Southampton and St.Denys stations. see http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/n/northam/index.shtml. Mentioning the Southampton area there was a station called Bletchynden (or Southampton West End) between the present Southampton Central station and Southampton Tunnel. (open 1847 closed 1895) see http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/s/southhampton_west/index.shtml

I have no record of the first station at Chichester being on a different site to the present station.
