My reasoning was:
Walton was on the Midland Peterborough Stamford line. Trains from Peakirk would have passed by it but not through it as the GN had separate tracks with no platforms.
These days there is only the one set of tracks and no platforms at all so maybe it should be counted
And Peterborough East was where the Northampton and Peterborough line started which is (with the complication of the heritage line) our next stretch.
Anyway I see we've progressed whilst I was drafting the above

I too have accepted your reasoning about Walton station, which Welshman was so kind as to refer to your "2012" adjudication on the matter, so that point is now fully agreed and accepted.
With regard to the Lincolnshire Loop Line route from Peakirk, the next station would be the currently open station of Peterborough (North) which we do not use on this quiz and from there, from what I have just heard during a telephone call from one concerned with the Nene Valley Railway was that the next station onwards from Peterborough North was that of Orton Waterville, which being an open heritage station is another one that we do not use on this quiz, so the next closed station after that was that of Castor, which was named by Welshman
However, I am most intrigued by the idea of the Peterborough North - Peterborough East - Orton Waterville routing, noting what I said earlier about Peterborough East being on the line that approached Peterborough from the Ely direction.

It's the way a passenger would have done it in the 'old' days. Either by train from Peterborough North to East or on foot. AFAIK the 'direct' connection from Peterborough North onto the Northampton/Rugby lines was only ever for freight

I rang my contact back, who after some consideration, concurs with what you say regarding the freight-only direct connections, admitting that the history of the freight traffic of the Peterborough control area was his main interest. So your SECOND adjudication of the evening is accepted with a copious amount of good grace.

The next move offers an interesting choice - the easiest move is to go to Hardingstone Jn and reverse - to arrive at Piddington
But it's possible to go into Northampton Bridge Street or even St Johns Street, depending on when this journey is taking place, both closed stations, and reverse there.

Wasn't Piddington on the Bedford to Northampton line, past the MOD depot, which I had as the station to follow on from after Northampton Bridge Street, leaving two more closed stations on that line, before we enter the final line of this journey, the Bedford to Hitchin line which has five closed stations on it.

Correct about Piddington's location - I was turning round at the junction between the Peterborough line and the Bedford line short of Bridge Street rather than going into it and reversing
Somewhere in the loft I have a child single ticket from Turvey to Northampton St Johns Street - issued for travel in 1960 ish some 20 years after the station closed

That station, like South Leith, was a terminal station, but I am unaware that there was ever a connection laid to connect both of these.
