just noticed that there was a station at Stobs Camp, about a mile north of Stobs, between 1903 and about 1959. It appears in the working timetable extract shown on the relevant page of "Disused Stations" so I think it should be noted for future journeys

Glad to be of assistance here. Stobs Camp was NOT situated on the main running line, but was served by a very short branch off it, in the area of Acreknowe Farm, which was north of Stobs Viaduct.

THIS IS WHY IT CANNOT BE USED AS A POSTING ON THE QUIZ

OK - looks like you are right. There is a WW1 picture on the camp website of the siding, with a passenger train stopped in the background. Initially I though it was on the main line, but on further research (OS 1:2500 map 1920) it appears that the sidings were more extensive than is shown on Rail Map online. There were four sidings with a pair of crossovers in each direction giving access to a headshunt 400 yd or so long - presumably so that troop trains could gain access from the main line from either direction without reversing. Loading or unloading a train with several hundred soldiers and kit must have taken some time. An interesting diversion!

OK Paul - I am trying to keep from going too fast as well! Hopefully we won't stray too far from the straight(ish) and narrow (compared with broad) while you are away.
