I wonder what 93002 is doing next - today ?.
There is a 0Q93.
EDIT - which is 68014 I just learnt (urgent TOPS thread).
Interestingly enough as well, 0Q93 is being operated by ROG, despite being a 68, according to RailCam:s

I imagine it's linked in some way to the 93 being at Gresty Bridge.

Has been announced that the 93s route clearance is complete
We are delighted to announce that our Class 93 locomotive has now achieved Full Nationwide Route Clearance for Diesel, Hybrid and 25 kV electric operation across our UK rail network.

This milestone marks a significant step forward in delivering an operationally flexible, low-emission mixed-traffic solution to the UK market, capable of operating seamlessly across all electrified and non-electrified RA7 routes. The Tri-Mode capability of the Class 93 enhances operational efficiency while directly supporting the rail industry’s decarbonisation ambitions.

Well spotted! They should have taken the opportunity for a trip to Thurso and back :)

This is being quoted on another forum as 93002, can anyone confirm?

I'd not appreciated that they have that much fuel range - had assumed that the diesel mode on the 93s was very much 'last mile' unlike the 99s.

Inverness is well away from the knitting. Maybe even for a low performance empty stock move. So I wonder what the possibilities are ?.

According to the Stadler spec sheet linked below, they've got a 3,200 litre fuel tank. Whilst this is less than the 5,000 litre tank fitted to eco body class 66s and class 68s, the CAT C32 engine in the 93 presumably uses a lot less fuel per mile compared to a 66 or 68. So I'd imagine the range light loco for all three locos is quite comparable.

I reacll that GWR were dismissing both class 93 and 99 from future plans for the Night Riviera, as the fiormer doen't have the grunt and the latter doesn't have ETS. Presumably the same applies to the Highlander, at least on the inverness leg. A 73/9, with more power than a 93 on diesel, has a 1500 litre fuel tank, which seems to be adequte to get from Inverness. Aberdenn or Fort Bill to Edinburgh and back (I don't think they refuel in Edinburgh).

I am surprised that the they think that the 93 isnt powerful enough - I was under the impression the night riviera was only about 8 carriages and the timetable is very generous in terms of padding.

The 93 only has a 900kW diesel engine, which would both has to supply hotel power to those 8 coaches & traction power for most of the route.
On electric the 93s are plentiful enough with their power, but they can't do long passenger runs away from catenary.

Indeed, thats 1200hp in old money - something like a class 24. And there are some big hills in South Devon.

As already stated ETS load on top of that, which won't be a small value with 8 mk3s, especially when one is a catering vehicle.
93 really a non-starter.

So the only way therefore to do that, is to run a 68 and a 93 together - 93 providing the beds till it gets to the wires (and the 68 using the grunt) then at teh wires the 68 is turned off.... or another form of better traction is located. FLX Drive in a 90/91 body?

Might as well just use the 68 solo at that point.

I’ve only just found this driver’s account of the trial of 93006 on 4Q38 Seaforth- Mossend on 11 February, the commentary is a technical but interesting read from the driver’s point of view:

Lovely photograph is that jadmor. Friendly looking driver with enthusiast, stunning hills in the background and the 93 looks fantastic as well. Thanks for sharing.

I note 93006 looks like it has gained a little scottish flag above the stadler logo.
