Thanks for that information. I hadn't appreciated how much more power the 90 can deliver at typical freight speeds. Makes me wonder why Freightliner run them in pairs?
My assumption is safer with more than four axles if two 90s are used.
What was the exact consist for 4S48? Intermodal can be very variable.
At low speeds a single Class 93 will beat a single class 90 on TE but at mid-high freight speeds a single 90 has more TE than a 93. A pair of 90s always has better TE at any speed than a 93. The question is how much better the pair of 90s perform than single 93 not whether they do.
The 93s are much more efficient though.

The 93s were designed for the trying to eek out extra paths on the ECML in between passenger services not to maximise tonnage per train on the the hills on the WCML/MML (which the 99s are).

The 90 TE and adhesion at low speeds isn't great (big changes in TE when notching up) which is solved by having two locos and rheostatic braking (with/without setspeed) is far better with 2 locos. They will sometimes operate with single 90s south of Crewe (to Ipswich / Willesden)
DRS struggle with 88/68s on the big WCML hills in autumn with 4 axles locos so they double up as well. The solution is 6 axles as the 66s prove usually managing fine in autumn on the same hills.
I can see the 93s being a good replacement for 66s on routes with only easy non-electrified parts. Subject to there only being four axles for gradients - I am thinking over the North WCML hills. The debates over the pros and cons of the class 89 spring to mind.

Tonight's 4m30 is 1760t, so plenty extra weight over last night. Going ok so far.
The southbound gradients are more forgiving than the northbound gradients and you would expect about 200tonnes extra trailing on the train should be sensible for any highish powered loco heading south. (ignoring practicalities of wagons need to go both ways, so tricky to use this in practice)

Clearly from your frequent posts on this thread you have something against ROG and the 93s, but it beat the pair of 90s used the previous night, in pretty bad weather conditions and with a 66 DIT too.
Nothing against the 93s - they are clearly a capable loco; just the fanboys are attributing near mythical properties to them which needs to be challenged. Thanks to @hwl for injecting a healthy dose of reality into the conversation.

As for ROG I have no dislike - I just think they have dropped an almighty clanger as a business by ordering locos with no firm use. That’s just bad business and it is no surprise that the CEO left.

If and it's a big if, Freightliner take them on, they are a small fleet so will be fairly constrained geographically.

Driver training is a huge job, so expect them to be on a specific route. Look at the 70s, mainly Southampton liners and Peak District stone.

Something like the Daventry - Scotland services, as suggested above, would suit - drivers sign electric traction so can convert relatively quickly with few depots involved.

If, for example, Gateway services were involved, those drivers don't sign electric traction. This would be then a 2 week course, plus driving hours for each driver. It's not simple to organise or cost effective in the short term.

Anyone know if 93006 worked back to Daventry on 4M30 yesterday? The other loco with it on its travels, 66512 is showing there on a TOPS list this morning.

Well yes, but would there be any economic benefit in using a 93 on routes that already use electric traction? I would have thought the most costs would be saved where a flow is part electric and part diesel. Or long stretches on diesel under the wires.

1 loco vs using 2 (crew and electric costs) and using the diesel in depot, vs using a depot shunter (more cost)

Potentially yes if it allows a more efficient overall diagram of the loco.

I’d still expect them to work Gateway services to be honest. Just seems the best use of the capabilities of the locos.

If the fleet was bigger, maybe. 10 is a small number of locos to then diagram your staff to cover. Especially from a base if 0 electric traction. If they already signed electrics, then it would be easier, but that's not the case.

You also have to consider there are "shed" turns there too. So they'd also have to sign the electrics.

It's really not straightforward.

I may eat my words and they appear at Gateway, but they'd be easier to implement and just as effective replacing diesel on the Ipswich - Birmingham jobs via Wembley for example. Most likely for me, on jobs with Crewe drivers on WCML.

I seem to remember 10 being only an initial order, with potential for a follow-up optional order of 20, so 30 total. Perhaps this is the critical moment where ROG will look to making the decision to go ahead with the follow-up if Freightliner are satisfied with the tests and want to use them long term.

I feel the whole point of these 93s is to reduce diesel running under the wires. Given these 93s only have a small engine I reckon this has to be routes with only a little non-electric working (otherwise a 99 fits the bill). So I would expect the aim would be to replace 66s on services that are mostly under the wires. For me that means routes involving London Gateway but not perhaps Felixstowe to/from Ipswich and definitely not Ipswich across country to Peterborough.

Granted it depends how onerous crewing etc diagram changes become.

If these 93s only replace 90s then I am not sure how the costs can be justified. But a huge green credential awaits those replacing 66s which are getting old and beginning to be in short supply anyway.

I’d expect them to use the 93’s for Gateway services. As has since been mentioned, it seems rather pointless to buy a multi-mode loco and only use it under the wires, meaning you still need to use your ageing and not particularly economical diesel fleet. The 66’s will need replacing at some point with a new fleet, so driver training would still need to be done. Makes more sense to have a one loco fits all, be it a 93 or 99.

But I don’t see this being more advantageous than Getaway/Tilbury - WCML runs which spend almost all the time under the wires…

Gateway - Trafford Park 3x daily
Gateway - Ditton 1x daily
Gateway - Garston 1x daily
Tilbury - Trafford Park 1x daily

Plus the Malcolm workings, that’s 8 out of 10 used up. Can’t quite see that so something will probably have to give.
Or they order more.

OK - Order hundreds more before we discover an inherent design flaw.

Lets see what these 93s are best at. Ideally eliminating 66s under the wires. But lets also see what a 99 can do - probably the workings requiring more diesel away from the wires.

93 - Medium weight electric loco with an engine and batteries for the missing little bits.

99 - Heavy weight diesel loco that can use the wires where available.

Both to replace 66s - well there is not much else these days is there !.
Thus leaving 66s for pure diesel routes.

Hmmm i wonder if ROG will go back to Stadler and ask for the remap package - after all the C32 can have up to 1900 bhp, so the 1200 it has now is more conservative....

Folks on this forum are genuinely wild at times.

Freightliner have completed their trial, and judging by their public response from them it has gone down well.

What happens next is between ROAL and Freightliner, if there is a next step.

Mark Hopwood discussed the potential for 99s hauling the Great Weetern sleepers and commented that he wanted the power and triaxle configuration but also batteries to reduce noise nuisance at depots. This was also an issue with TPEx 68s at Scarborough. I wonder if a halfway solution will emerge.

The ability to cool the engine is the limitation not it's ability to produce more power.

What I don't know is how the economics stack up: for instance, how are NR access charges calculated and how do 93 charges compare to a 66 or a 99? How much time and money does it cost to swap locomotives at Ipswich/Crewe/Willesden? Just how tight is the timetabling out of Felixstowe (where 93s will be much slower up the hill than a 66). How much do shunter locomotives cost and are there any yards or ports that could save those costs when 93s replace Electrics? How much fuel does a 93 consume off the wires compared to a 66 or 99? How does the cost of red diesel compare to AC charges from NR? What additional freight paths on the WCML and the ECML would be available to a 4MW 93, that a 1.3MW 66 could not service, and how valuable would those paths be to FOC customers?

Yes. There would be a market for them, but it is whether the freightcos could actually make the sums work.
From what I understand
DBC don't use any AC traction north of Cheriton
GBRf only use their 92s on Caley sleeper work apart from their channel tunnel work
Freightliner use an increasing fleet of 30+ year old 90s
DRS use a handful of their ten 88s on intermodals

Maybe if the 93 is as successful as has been reported in this week's trial then when Freightliner are able to consider traction replacement, the 93s might be an option. We aren't privy to the track access costs from Network Rail of relative freight paths for class 93 and class 66 given that class 93 performance would seem to be easier to slot in between passenger trains.

Would there still be a likelihood of Stadler building 93011-93030 as options, or has that ship sailed ? It seems to me that the cabs on class 93 and class 99 are modular and very similar in appearance. Are the "Bo" bogies of class 93 anything like those used in Europe ? Presume most of the AC traction cabinets are modular so perhaps it is the diesel and battery modules that might present a potential problem for the options.
