Liverpool - Norwich was a nightmare for bookings and infuriated many occasional users not expecting it. It made sense to abolish that element of the torture for passengers and crew.
Standing room only was compounded by delays, cancellations and/or short forming on EMR, TPE or Northern services between Manchester and Sheffield. I copy below the comments I made on this Friday afternoon picture from February 2014. At least we're now seeing 5 and 6 car trains and 2 car are less common.
(Amazing that 12 years later these 158 units still look look much the same!)
East Midlands Trains Friday afternoon service, Liverpool - Nottingham, shortly after leaving Stockport
Congestion had eased slightly at Stockport as more passengers had alighted than got on. At Manchester Piccadilly a number of passengers were unable to board this train at all having to wait half an hour for the next - which would probably have had a similar problem with travellers playing sardines.
Due to the difficulty passengers were experiencing getting on and off it was half an hour late arriving in Sheffield. That's inevitable when half a dozen passengers have to get off from each doorway at each stop to allow others to disembark before getting back on!
Rail travel has increased in popularity faster than capacity has been able to expand to match it. This train is always crowded with commuters travelling the hour from Sheffield to Manchester and back each day. Standing all the way is quite normal.
We had booked seats for this train. What a joke!
