Liverpool - Norwich was a nightmare for bookings and infuriated many occasional users not expecting it. It made sense to abolish that element of the torture for passengers and crew.

Standing room only was compounded by delays, cancellations and/or short forming on EMR, TPE or Northern services between Manchester and Sheffield. I copy below the comments I made on this Friday afternoon picture from February 2014. At least we're now seeing 5 and 6 car trains and 2 car are less common.

(Amazing that 12 years later these 158 units still look look much the same!)

East Midlands Trains Friday afternoon service, Liverpool - Nottingham, shortly after leaving Stockport

Congestion had eased slightly at Stockport as more passengers had alighted than got on. At Manchester Piccadilly a number of passengers were unable to board this train at all having to wait half an hour for the next - which would probably have had a similar problem with travellers playing sardines.

Due to the difficulty passengers were experiencing getting on and off it was half an hour late arriving in Sheffield. That's inevitable when half a dozen passengers have to get off from each doorway at each stop to allow others to disembark before getting back on!

Rail travel has increased in popularity faster than capacity has been able to expand to match it. This train is always crowded with commuters travelling the hour from Sheffield to Manchester and back each day. Standing all the way is quite normal.

We had booked seats for this train. What a joke!

No, I was in the leading coach. According to RTT it was 810013, the 1400 ex Sheffield. I was actually trying to listen out for the change as well so either it is very subtle or there was an issue with that car? Can they keep time on 3 engines?
I was on an 810 from London the other week, I didn't even notice the engine kick in, or it powering. It was definitely on when I exited the coach though. I find it depends where you sit in the coach. In the driving car if you sit at the toilet end, you can hardly notice it too.

I’m not intending to single you out in particular @Killingworth, but I’m going to say (and you probably know what I’m going to say ;)) that some of this stuff about reservations is starting to get a little off topic.

I think if I don’t mention it now it might start to take over the thread. It might be worth a separate thread if anyone wants to start one though obviously.

Thanks everyone

Is there a current list of Class 810s in service, or if not in service their current status as of today?

Do you know anything about the progress of 810016? Should be a week or so behind 014
Not seen 016 outside for several weeks.
Yesterday 810017 was shunted from test shed to post-production modification tent.
Also outside was 810019 undergoing static testing.

My source suggests 014 arriving on 20/02 and 016 on 27/02 but although fairly reliable those dates are not solid
Cheers!

So 810014 did one night of testing last week on the mainline and then none this weekz
The unit has been sat stationary in the yard at Newton Aycliffe all week.
Doesn't bode well.

If that is the case then they are on course to have five sets in service by Spring which is what they said they would do. A total of 9 sets by then leaving a further 24 to go.

S Yorks, usually
Had a ride today Sheffield-Derby and back. Both 810s.
0935 from Sheffield, bit chilly inside (previous working was empty from Etches Park, after a night below zero), ride was good, on time or within a minute throughout. 810013.
1429 from Derby, toasty warm, ride good, minute or two late as it was following the very late previous service from St P, early arrival into Sheffield thanks to timetable allowances. Toilet in coach A out of order (didn’t check any others). 810011.
With clear signals ahead, I put the stopwatch on for the stretch up the hill from Chesterfield: from departing Chesterfield, it passed Dronfield at 4m26s, and Dore S Jn in 6m07s for which the RTT timings show 7m30 including 1m30 of allowances.

810011 appears to be in trouble, having had 6 minutes overtime at Leicester on the 10:35 SHF-STP, due to door issues. 222014 has been stepped up into the back working (13:02 STP-SHF).

That same unit worked the 06:10 from Leicester - St Pancras this morning and was 15 late with announcements saying there was a problem with the train.

At this rate is there any point sending more new 810s over until this lot can be made to work properly and reliably?

Possibly. Maybe some of the fault finding on the initial batch means the next batch will be "pre-fixed". But there is the question of how many more 810s can be accommodated at Etches Park without losing some more 222s.
