People giving an opinion on the seats after sitting in them is evidence. Certainly in the context of this discussion.

Random internet forum newbie telling everyone they are wrong. Not evidence.

Troll thread.
And also exaggerating.. I sat on it and it was fine, I even asked my mum who went on both the 800 and intercity 225 which was more comfortable and she said the 800 was more comfortable, it’s clear people over exaggerate their feelings or just completely make them up from what other people have said

I travelled on GWR from Paddington to Oxford the other day. Got a seat with the metal bar problem very uncomfortable, glad I was only going to Oxford. On return trip seat was OK.

Too far from an HST...
yep, you are right but why did they include the card holding slots in the first place?
Failure redundancy at a guess

I have to say that I've travelled thousands of miles on 80x units (I commute to work three days a week on Azumas) and I have never considered the lighting an issue whatsoever. The seats in standard are quite another thing, of course, though my commute (35 minutes on trains where I almost always get 2 seats to myself) isn't ever going to be a big issue in seat comfort. Having said that, I've never encountered a really bad "metal bar" seat issue yet.

I also see people complain about a “metal bar” in the seats however I went on an iet over 10 years old, 800101 and could not feel this metal bar. The only way I could feel it is if I literally had my feet up ON THE SEAT and my knees against my chest… nobody is going to sit like that be real

Well you and your mum can trumpet how wonderful they are to your heart's content, but don't get a strop on when loads of people with a lot more travelling experience of them than you come on this thread and tell you they're crap.

Joining a forum to rant at other members surely cannot be a productive use of your time during the summer holidays?

And i’m sure if you ask actual people without biased opinions who aren’t on this website 24/7 for YEARS and don’t dedicate their whole life to learning everything about trains (LIKE ME) they would also agree that these older trains are more uncomfortable. I just guess some people are stuck in the past and can’t move on to realise that modern is better

That makes a sample size of 2, which is just great.

Which is more comfortable to travel on, a 50 year old passenger carriage, or a 1 year old freight wagon?

Honestly no not really but i was only going to be on here in the morning when I wasn’t going to be doing anything until a bunch of people started to jump me, I have already been on 2 holidays this summer and 2 more flights to go so i feel like this is just a break from holidays and packing.

Well, I wasn't sat like that I can assure you. You have to accept that what people on here say is true account of their experience. Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

I never mentioned freight wagons… old train vs modern… I don’t know anything about those

Then you clearly aren’t what the seats were designed for most people would be just fine

Freight wagons are still trains, thus we have managed to establish that there are some new trains that probably aren't very pleasant to travel on.

Then again, I have never travelled on freight wagons. I have however done train surfing on the outside of a locomotive, and that was quite a lot more pleasant than sitting in a Class 800.

Very often, the metal bar is distinctly visible among the rest of the collapsed cushion. Like in this image below from over two years ago.

Because they wasn’t designed to carry passengers… It’s quite clear it was about comparing modern PASSENGER trains vs old ones.. not freight trains I didn’t think that would be something I need to clarify

We have still established that a train being newer doesn't make it better.

Train seats should be as comfortable as possible for as many people as possible. The seats on most 80x do not achieve that. Some 80x (803, 805, 807)are fitted with more comfortable seats that provide a comfortable journey for most people. Some people might like the seats on the initial 80x, however they are almost certainly a minority, and the portion of those who enjoy sitting on a metal bar is even smaller.

My experience with the trains is mostly travelling between Inverness and London but for the most part I like them. They don't have noisy underfloor engines or vibrations from them through the cabin, they have working air-conditioning and heating, they don't have 1/3 doors and they have quite a bright and airy spacious feel to the cabin. I find the standard class seats do leave me feeling a bit numb after a while which isn't great and while I've not tried taking a bike on the IET, I've had a look in the little cupboard which was packed with luggage at the time and pretty sure it wouldn't fit the MTB.

As a lot of people have said on here, what lets them down is quality of life things: seat comfort, lighting, buffet provision etc.
These are all things that can, and might well be, fixed in the future. The lighting does seem to be getting gradually better - TPEs and Avanti's sets seem somewhat less intrusive than GWR and LNER's. However, in a really arbitrary way, if it gets me from point A to point B with no hiccups, then it's good enough for me - the other bits are a bonus.

And that's why I personally don't mind them. Sure there are more comfortable trains, but the benefits that have been pointed out too - much quicker acceleration, very reliable, better accessibility provision.

It will be interesting to see how the 810s at EMR fair, as there are differences, and generally for the better, between the units. Personally, I'm going to withhold most of my judgement until we see how they turn out, as I'm relatively indifferent to the units to date.

Recently, I went on a 807 between Runcorn and Crewe, the couldn't reach 125MPH - due to the units not being built with a tilt mechanism! The speed felt like a 110MPH 350 Desiro on the same route.
Thats what it’s speed would have been linespeed permitting

The only thing I don't like about the IETs is the hard seats.

Everything else about them; seating layout, seat / window match, capacity and so on seems to be spot on to me. I'd prefer the lighting to be a bit toned down, yes.

Put it this way: I rode them the very first day they were introduced; I was on the first one out of Paddington to Bristol and back. From that day on, I only went on GWR HSTs four times - and in each instance it was because either the IETs were not yet on the route ( Tenby ) or because it would have meant a very long wait at Reading for an IET to turn up.

Can somebody please close this thread down before my head explodes? @charlier is clearly having a whale of a time trolling us all.

P.S. my Mum, normally a quite reserved person, once said something about the seats in a GWR 800 that I couldn't write here in case a 16-year old happened to read it.
My family have also made similar comments about the seats, totally on their own accord.

Two train seats i sat on had what felt like a metal bar under where your bum goes. Probably the most uncomfortable seat ive ever sat on. Absolutely terrible.
The seats on the train up were uncomfortable and had like a ridge or bump.

I am not trolling.. I think your just angry and feel that way because someone is finally speaking actual truth on everyone complaining about the trains because they are stuck in the past.

It must only be gwr then I don’t even get how a bar would magically appear if it wasn’t there before
The bar is always there, you can see it by turning the seat cushions over.
