Transverse 2x2 and longitudinal

Isn't the seating different on the two batches? GOBLIN and DC trains are longitudinal throughout. I assume those extra going to NLL/WLL will be the same.

West Anglia sets are a mix of transverse and longitudinal - probably similar to the 345s. I haven't seen an official release of the seating layout for the 710s just a basic description by London Overground around the time the original order was confirmed.

Still 6 months to go, there wasn't much at Ilford in the way of 345s last December, which was 6 months before the first unit appeared. They need to get the failure rate on 345s down first though, it's becoming quite a routine finding the 18:07 being cancelled nowadays...

The bit with the 310 fleet that I'm surprised with, given Thameslink stock, Crossrail stock and some of the new GA stock, is that they've gone for 4 car units for the full fleet. I'd have thought (especially if there's passenger growth) that for the Lee Valley Lines subfleet fixed 8 car formations would have been a viable option.
Couldn't agree more. They're 8-carriage formation for most of the day too! (2 x 4-carriage trains coupled together). I hate seeing trains coupled together. Missed opportunity there, although I think it's because of the GOBLIN and Romford <-> Upminster routes.

given that GOBLIN is using a subfleet (longitudinal seating and DC capability) shared with Watford, it would have been feasible to include Rominster in that fleet

No they aren't. Only two sets of diagrams are 8-cars between the peak and that's largely because 317s are barred from being planned as 4-cars away from Upminster and general fleet reliability mitigation. With the possible exception of stabling space those go in full 710 operation and a much more reactive plan can be developed.

I was within the Chingford route recently and noticed some 8-car services between 10:00 and 11:30 as well as 15:00 and 15:30 hence those times are off-peak

Some eight car trains are not decoupled during the day because of the risk of not being able to recouple in time for peak service - Tightlock couplings are finicky.

They've begun to escape from Litchurch Lane - one has moved to Old Dalby.

Bizarrely, the numbering for the /2 fleet has started at 56. I could understand if it started at 58 - it'd then be a logical progression from the 378/2 fleet who are similarly dual voltage and all longitudinal seats. But starting from 56 makes no sense at all from my view.

They've also gone away from the system on the 345 where the outermost wheelsets are tread braked going for all disks instead. Possibly as a result of the need to fit shoegear (the little protruding black box?) but possibly something else all together?

The shoegear is difficult to see in this picture, but it is under a sort of creamy-coloured 'hood' in the centre of the bogey.

Interesting that that one in the image is numbered 710256.. This proves that Wikipedia is wrong

Numbering series is 710101-131 for AC-only units and 710256-269 for dual-voltage sets. The x32-x55 gap is for options under the contract with Bombardier that TfL can take up for extra sets.

All units will have longitudinal seating according to Modern Railways magazine.

Is that being reported by Modern Railways as a change of plan? Because TfL had been fairly consistent in saying there would be two different layouts...

Looks that way. "While the original intention was to have two variants of interior layout...the 710 fleet will now uniformly have all longitudinal seating to maximise capacity".

It was just like that with the S7 stock the District ones were going to have some longitudinal seating where as the Circle and Hammersmith & City would have longitudinal throughout but this was soon changed when they decided to standardize the surface stock fleet.

The original plan was for all S stock to have the S8 layout. The change was to provide the longitudinal layout on all S7. There was never a step differentiating H&C/Circle would be different from District. S7 has always been intended to be a homogeneous fleet.

That’s an awful downgrade when you consider right now I could be sitting in a declassified 317 first class seat! OK, so 315s are awful so maybe it’s an upgrade from those but seriously

From this:

To what will basically be like this:

only harder, since it is an Aventra.

It will not be an upgrade from a 315. Sitting sideways with no view other than at the person opposite is not comfortable. However, for most even this will not be an option - the huge decrease in seated capacity will mean a downgrade to standing.

315s are IMO the worst units out there so I probably would prefer any other rail unit!
