its a signal protection zone, where a train operates within an electrically switched and buffered section of route - between Dorking and Horsham in this case. It requires only the train being tested to be electrically operational, with all others being switched off within the section- so the testing of the class 710 and recording through to test equipment receives "clean" test results. So basically operation will be over night when no other passenger trains are operating. Diesel trains however can pass through the section - but with this location, it may just be the sandite MPV's perhaps. The testing will include acceleration, harmonic and braking tests.

Thanks for clarifying, shame it's at late at night. Maybe the initial run down to wherever it berths might be a better time

Do the traction electronics on diesel-electrics not cause EM fields too? Is it just diesel-mechanical and diesel-hydraulic permitted?

Yes, diesel-electrics cause EM fields too, particularly if they have AC drive (like straight EMUs and locos with AC drive). The Anglia network had a terrible time when the FLIRTs were introduced into areas that had never seen AC drive units before, as many metallic items weren't earthed & bonded correctly. Not sure if 68s/70s caused the same problems, as they too have AC motors.

TL;DR - DHMUs and DMMUs are OK, DEMUs aren't.

Yesterday pm there was a 710 unit on the 2nd nearest siding to main line at Willesden Depot, but was blocked for number view by a 378 Unit. Many thanks for any info.

Am I right in thinking these four carriage units haven’t carried passengers yet?

Spz testing????
Signal Protected Zone from previous postings.

SPZ is Signal Protection Zone. Basically only the relevent test train(s) can operate in the defined area and in the case of testing electric trains all other trains stabled within such a zone must have pantographs lowered so as not to interfere with any test results.

More to it than that but that's the basics.

Just out of curiosity, what made them drag them down to Dorking, could they not have just used the Watford dc?

Ability to test and monitor without any other trains around - very useful if you are looking at EMC compliance / regneration etc.

Iam not sure about the 4-car as it could have been driven, however the 5-car has no authority to operate unless within a spz. speed limits, electrical buffering sections and service prohibited the spz from being along the dc watford route.

Surprised to see 710260 & 710271 at London Liverpool St this afternoon, stood at platform 7 on a Chingford working (think it was 2T62, 13.48 dep). Later, I went past Willesden on 1H69 (14.40 from EUS to MAN), and was surprised to see the depot pretty much deserted, bar good old D3671, and a 378 round the back. Is TFL changing its servicing / signing-on arrangements, such that the 710s are now being pooled across the former Willesden and Ilford allocations? It would be surprising if they're all based out of Ilford now, as I've read on other threads that space is at a premium at Ilford . Can anyone shed any light? Or perhaps it was just one of those things today!
