Class 60 Preservation Group

Finally, someone who agrees with me... Probably THE only modern loco that has ever sounded hellfire.

Not all of them, most of them sound like my kettle when it's boiling

Give it a year or two and everyone will be frothing over them :-P

I've always been partial to a class 60 and it would be nice to see one preserved when the time comes. I guess it's a good idea to get started early, buying trains is an expensive hobby...

Agreed, they've grown on me now were all surrounded by GMs, but I don't think one would be put up for sale just yet, not when DB are ordering EWS to bring locos like the 60s back to traffic.

On a class 60 it is, mind you I haven't see a BR Green 60.

I believe at one point EWS were planning to get rid of the 60s and just have a pool of lower geared 66s for working that required locos with a higher power output.

No, fraid not. The idea of any new kit went out of the window when Ed was got rid of and back then, 58s and 60s were well in favour.

You won't see any new until the 60s are a) all broken beyond repair b) fully utilised or c) someone comes along with a proven new super sparkly heavy freight loco that threatens to take business away from EWS if they can't compete.

Option A seems the most likely at the moment.

That said, with 56s alledgedly going to Poland and 58s alledgedly for Spain maybe there is more life in the tugs than we all think!

Isn't it a little bit deaded though? As far as I know it was never put back into service - or am I missing something? If the former then you'd presumably need to sacrifice another loco, meaning you'd need to obtain a second 60 at from the start?

Great work lads. A great loco, preservation may seem abit premature but in todays environment you just never know.

Possibly, but a 'few' parts and a bit of new body work and bobs your uncle!

Also, if it's completely deaded, it should cost less!

Personally I like 60`s, they have a good sound and dont look bad either! I think its a shame that out of all the 60`s that could have failed it had to be 081 IKB as this was prob aesthetically the best 60 of all!

But what livery would be most popular say if in 5 years time, they were up for tender. There are say a line of 10 locos in similar condition, with at least one example which originaly carried certain sector brands, think i would go for coal, not sure why. Grew up near toton so i guess i saw them the most.

Well theres a serious failure if I ever did see one.
I heard about this recently but never seen any shots of this but if you want a celebrity loco like this then well the idea of buying two locos is perfect because you have choice which one to scrap and which to keep plus 60081 would most likely be alot cheaper.

Why buy one 60 just because of the livery it's in?

It's just like people buying a 47 as it was once in GWR green or buying a 37/4 as it was in BR Green, even though they were both knackered. :roll:

If I was buying a 60, I'd look for one which I could afford, and was in the best condition, internally and externally.
