Looks great to me, I would love it if at least 1 was preserved. Ok, they are not majorly old locos, but I do like 'em. Like the idea of a preservation group. Keep up the good work guys!

That's what I've thought at first, but then again why not? There is a lot of money involved and there's no harm to starting early. Perhaps they could procure more because they have more funds?

Anyway, it's a good site and I'm sure they'll get the funds to procure a class 60 no problem: IMO they're among the best of the "modern" locos,

Great thing about owning a freshly withdrawn class 60 is that all it'll need is a thorough (yes, thorough, remember these things are from EWS and are going pop now) overhaul and then it can get back on the mainline hauling railtours etc, as it'll already have the AWS, TPWS and OTMR equipment, plus the NRN if you're lucky

Yeah, I agree... Ok, they are not the most interesting locos ever, but at least they have the equipment available for mainline use. They will be the next 37's... Maybe preservation is a tad early, but when it's time, roll it on... lets see some saved!

What a friend told me ages ago is that to Preseve and Restore a Class 60, you would have to buy an extra 2 or 3 for spares, as they do take a lot of maintainence.

Hear hear, I've always liked them ever since they were first introduced, & always been at the top of my list. And, I wonder if people do realise these beasts are more powerful than a 66?

That's just down to the gearing. The Freightliner 66/6s have a lower gear ratio (and consequently a lower top speed) to give a higher tractive effort, similar to that of a class 60. I believe at one point EWS were planning to get rid of the 60s and just have a pool of lower geared 66s for working that required locos with a higher power output.

Yes, some 66/5s are also FLHH locos but don't have the same gears as 66/6s.

I've always been partial to a class 60 and it would be nice to see one preserved when the time comes. I guess it's a good idea to get started early, buying trains is an expensive hobby...
