Are we any closer to actual facts (or credible rumours) regarding what’ll happen to the 458/4s post 701 replacement? I’ve seen and heard various opinions (some quite sensible, others (imo) pure wibble).

I would imagine the DfT/leasing companies would prefer to find a new home for the 350/2s before their attention is drawn to the 458/4s.

I’m not sure how relevant that is as they wouldn’t be used for the same routes anyway. And I’d bet my life on 350/2s never getting shoes. I’m so so bored of that suggestion.

It looks like South Western Railway will be dumping the 458/4s and 458/5s so this raises the question of where they could go. Here is a few ideas I had of services they could do.

1) Southern - London to Southampton/Portsmouth/Hastings/Ore services

2) Southeastern - Kent Coast services

3) London Overground - Southern Metro

4) Transport for Wales - South Wales Coastal electrification

5) Metro West Bristol

6) Manchester Bee Network

7) Scotrail - Merged into the class 334 fleet

Another fiasco on SWR's watch. Incredible the 4 car program was sanctioned given they effectively can't run as 12 car.

The 458s have no future. They are heading to the scrapyard once enough of the 701s are in service. Maybe one will get preserved if we are lucky but i even think that looks unlikely. No other train operator will be interested in them. The 458s only future is the scrapyard.

Remarkable that the DfT allowed this to go ahead, yet other operators like Northern are still stuck with ageing, unreliable rolling stock, and XC still has overcrowding issues. 458/4s were not money well spent.

I can’t see them going to Scotland as it seems the work required for them to run on AC would be prohibitive.

Unfortunately I agree with the general view that the next step will be following the 442s into “recycling”. The SWR franchise has been something of a shambles, and it isn’t all down to Covid.

It was allowed to go ahead because it was a perfectly sensible project, based on providing 2+2 seating into London from places like Portsmouth.

A comparison with Northern doesn’t really work here.

I see 2 options for the 458/4s:

1. Retained by SWR as the 450s lease is more expensive and they could bin some 450s.

2. Scrap

I think 2 is more likely, but let’s wait and see

Where's the provision of 2+2 seating from Cardiff to Portsmouth, a journey of nearly double the length of London to Portsmouth? Instead of the 165/166s that run with uncomfortable seats in a 3+2 layout, sometimes in 2 car formations.

I find it odd that there seems to be significant clamour to bin Networkers and 323s, but not the 458s, despite the fact that the 458s are probably as unloved as either of the other fleets.

Having said that, perhaps getting the seats out of the 458s and putting them in a better class of unit, may be a good step.

The 458s are newer and have just had a load of money spent on them.

The 458s have AC which occasionally works ;)

These trains have been shambolic since introduction, their 25 years old why not just scrap them? SWR simply don’t require them anymore. The Class 350/2 is another story, such a highly reliable EMU must be able to find a good new home somewhere? The is simply no reason as to why Class 350/2 should find no work!

I wasn’t trying to imply 350/2s would come down south, there’s no suitable work for them. Just that the DfT seem incapable of running multiple parallel projects. There was a time them coming to SWR would have been sensible but that was 7 odd years ago.

Given the intention was to run them as 12 coach trains this was never, at any stage, a sensible project and this should have been known prior to spending millions of pounds of taxpayers cash on a pointless refurb.

@Big Jumby 74 has summed up the issues on the main 458 thread:

The potential issue of 12 car 458 is not about platform lengths/passenger door operation in the context you mention. It's about signal sighting for the driver of any such formation at Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour. There are only three platforms at Waterloo, and two at Portsmouth Harbour that can accommodate such a formation, and allow the driver to see the departure signal aspect from his/her seated position in the cab. At all other platforms the signal will be so close to, and above the train, that the driver can not see it.
The platform (ramp end) infrastructure at both those stations is very crowded, such that there is little if any space to move the signal gantries any further out, hence the signal sighting issues.
To sum up, three platforms at Waterloo (two of which are not ideally suited to Main Line departures) and two at Portsmouth Harbour, are in theory useable for 12 car 458, but to plan a reliable half hourly service with so few terminal platforms, would be a very risky ask, if one takes in to account potential point & signal failures, which could leave trains with no platform to use, and cause added disruption. But that is for the current operators to decide.

Snow1964 has just commented similarly whilst I've been trying to get my fingers to work!

So that's 442s and 458s that were massively upgraded to no end.

I think its going to be yet another case of a recently refurbished train going to the scrap. None will be preserved probably.

See all the other times SWR did the exact same thing: the 442 and 456. (also GN's 365s)

Sadly electric train preservation is nigh impossible.

They have not been shambolic since introduction. For quite some time under SWT they were very reliable - the most reliable trains in the country, in fact. How is that “shambolic”?

Once the 175s enter service this should help as more 15Xs will be moved east therefore allowing more 158 diagrams on Portsmouth to Cardiff workings.

Portsmouth to Cardiff takes a set 8 hours to work and runs hourly so that is 8 sets and preference is two run in pairs so 16 units would be required to create 8 sets. Maybe the 458/4s could be rebuilt for the Cardiff to Portsmouth services and run as 4 & 8 car sets and increase frequency to half hourly.

My solution to this problem would be to attach batteries to them and use them to replace the 158s and 159s. The 158/9 routes are not suited to the 3+2 seating of the 450s. The issue however is that there are only 28 converted 458s, with 24 needed for the West of England line with 8 car trains throughout. However 4 458/5s are still leased by SWR and if these were converted, it would enable the entire WofE operation to move to battery operation.

The Romsey-Sailsbury service would be moved to GWR and operated by GWR stock after the retirement of the 158s.

Even the 365s managed to get a few years of use after their refurbishment. SWR got nothing out of the 442s, and are only getting something out of the 458s because the 701s are massively late.

If the issue of signal sighting is such a show-stopper, this was always going to be the case, before the 458 refurb was signed off. So in essence it seems they’ve been refurbished for a line they essentially cannot work on.

Not that familiar with the 458s, but no chance of them going to Southeastern to give some of the Networkers a break?

Couldn’t SWR have refurbished some of the 450s to 2+2 seating instead of trying to reinvent the wheel unsuccessfully with the 442s and latterly, the 458s.

Some of the 458s are only 4 years older than the 465s. It would make sense to have an interim train as they slowly scrap the 465/9s but I can't see them taking something so old. (and also of a completely different train family)

To be fair the 456 was an SWT conversion/update after leaving Southern. SWR's mistake with hindsight perhaps, was off loading them too soon, before the 701's had been made ready, so in many cases what had been 10 car 455/456 reverted to 8 car 455.
If the issue of signal sighting is such a show-stopper, this was always going to be the case, before the 458 refurb was signed off.
In a general sense at some locations the sighting issue has been/can be addressed by placing co-acting signals ahead of the main signal aspect, but in a position that any driver of a longer formation can clearly see, be that on the ground or perhaps lower down on a gantry post. Platforms 11 & 8 at Waterloo being two examples, these both being in relation to 12 car 450 formations - so it can be understood why 12 car 458 (being longer) creates a greater problem.

The main hurdles to overcome for those platforms unable to accommodate 12 car 458 as is, would be physical space to position a co-acting signal a sufficient distance ahead of the main aspect, in relation to track circuits, point work etc, and of course £cost benefit.

If 12 car Class 458 consists are problematic… what exactly was the point in reverting them to being four car units?

Given the 458 reliability problems, I doubt SE would want the extra hassle of crew and maintenance learning on another fleet, only to get no decent return in service.

Weren't the 442s meant to be put on Portsmouth services? If so there seems to be a curse of refurbishing trains for that route, only to then swiftly bin them off.
