Class 458/5

What's the current guesstimate as to when all the 458/5s will be in service (excluding the three that are out of service awaiting repairs)?

Late Feb or probably March. So well within the current timetable period. There is some evidence in other SWT announcements about service changes, indicating that they expect to be up to the full fleet sometime in the new year, rather than in May.

The cycle time for the trip to Doncaster is around 10 weeks, with the last one about to go. But theoretically the last few should speed up, unless they reduce the workforce too early.

It only seems to be two awaiting repairs, was that a typo?

The 07:23 Windsor to Waterloo has been 8x 450 all week this week, is this a permanent change? Seems a very backwards step to reduce capacity on this service. It's not been noted as a short formation on SWT's journey check.

Also nice to have the 17:05 back after a 3 month break, again though this was only 4 coaches yesterday (not seen it the rest of the week) and not noted on journey check so hope this is not a result of the 'improvments' we keep hearing about.

I guess in the final timetable with the full planned 32 from 36 458/5s in service, the stand in trains used for failures are almost always going to be a pair of 450s, given the relative sizes of the fleets there will always be more flexibility in terms of pure numbers rather than as a percentage.

If people really want 10 car though, I suppose they could try and rustle up a 455/455/456 combination. Must also depend on train crew traction knowledge - or do the chaps in that area all sign the three main types?

The 1705 is planned to be a 4-car at the moment, until more 458/5s are in traffic. Early January 2016 is the date given for it to revert to an 8-car.

The path is usually in quite a few days a a week. Just used as and when a unit is ready.

I'm guessing 528 is next to come down from Doncaster. its been up there for over a month. Any word on the 2 458/5's that need repair? With 458/5 conversion nearing completion I suppose the next big thing will be class 707. I know this the 458/5 forum but is there anyway of finding out the progress of the 707?

It has been reported that the one with the minor shunting sideswipe, 458518, is being fixed at Bournemouth.

With 458/5 conversion nearing completion I suppose the next big thing will be class 707. I know this the 458/5 forum but is there anyway of finding out the progress of the 707?

Apparently 67701 is to be moved from 458 501 into 458 518 in order to make one good unit out of the two bad units.

No idea if this "loan" will end up being permanent.

So the damaged car could still be going to be fixed at Bournemouth - but on its own?

Didn't combining the two units to make one good set get suggested somewhere the day the Clapham Yard incident happened, does it really take months to make that sort of decision?

Whatever happens we will end up with a mega-bad unit that could take absolutely ages to be repaired. Unless, that is, they haven't been repaired yet because they want to spend more resources getting the rest of the fleet done, which seems more sensible. How long would a repair like this take theoretically?
