Has any repair work been started yet on 458501 or are they currently waiting for all the conversions to be completed first?

There seem to be just three pairs of 458/0s diagrammed now, but one of these is short-formed daily. That means they can only muster 5 units from the remaining 9.

All 5 coaches of 458501 are still in sidings next to station in works area and not moved for a while so repairs probably are waiting until rest are converted.

The investigation found that it was a junction box that had loose connections. Guess that all units were quickly checked for similar issues.

458/0 coaches on lowloaders at wimbledon when I passed earlier.

Supposed to have a 459 today but a desiro turned up.Another driver told me a 459 conked out in the AM with traction motor problems.

I travelled on 8021 today - it was rather rough riding (more so than usual for a 458).

I see some scumbag has extensively graffiti-ed another 458/5. Where does this keep happening?

There has been an enormous amount of graffiti attacks recently. Not on units though. Lineside structures are absolutely covered in new ones, right the way along the 13.5 miles from Hounslow to Waterloo that I observed today :cry:

Saw a few new 458/5's 458509/525/527 or something like that of which I haven't seen before (well not under new number).Also my first trip into platform 20.

Quite diabolical this afternoon :P

458534+458525 on the 2U44 1453 Windsor & Eton Riverside to London Waterloo sat down fpr 15 minutes at Clapham Junction. The next working 2U47 1558 London Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside was run fast to Feltham, leaving 12 late and recovering to 4 late.

458505 (2S44 1433 Weybridge to London Waterloo) was fine on arrival at Waterloo, until it had to attach to 458511! Needed more than one attempt to be successful, causing the next working, 2R45 1615 London Waterloo to London Waterloo, to be run fast to Barnes, going from 9 late to RT.

Finally, after many moons of waiting, I got my first ride on a 458/5 today, 458533 I think, so one of the ex-460's. I think they are very functional (in theory at least) trains, with good ride quality still etc. My only complaint is that I was seated at the back and some of the motor sounds are at an incredibly high pitched whine, which is annoying whenever it comes on. But apart from that, I very much like the units.

I wonder if that is more noticeable due to the re-gearing for 75 mph - if perhaps you are comparing with previous experience of the 460s?

The last time I went on a class 460 was years ago, but I don't seem to recall any particularly loud whining motor noises. They were always very quiet units.

Was it a loud whine from the motors when stationary? Some of them are prone to doing that, no idea why though. Or, if you were in a driving coach, it could be the inverter, which is a high pitched buzzing. One driving coach also has a lot of vibration from the traction pack cooling fan; there are others like that, but 458533 is probably the worst.

More stuff conking out! 458502+458533 were the offending units, while on the 2S64 1937 Weybridge to London Waterloo. Departed Virginia Water 7 late after the usual thing, a door fault. No idea which coach, but I'm sure the 6th coach didn't open when it should. Later struggled to open the doors at Staines and Ashford, becoming 10 late by Hounslow where I got off. It later sat down at Barnes, leaving there 20 late and run fast to Waterloo.
The next service 2V65 2107 London Waterloo to London Waterloo left 20 late as well, and was run fast to Brentford, although behaved after that.

Looks like this coming Monday will have more changes to the 458/5 diagrams judging by a couple of Sunday evening specials.
