Would they not have run at 100 in the (very) early days when they were used on Farnham/Alton services?

From the previous page:
458s were designed and built with a maximum speed of 100mph, but SWT 'restricted' to 90mph (I think when they were diagrammed/relegated onto the Windsor lines) the only 'restriction' being the writing in the cabs and reducing the maximum power output to 45%ish.

which seems to suggest that yes they would've

as I have said before windows 1.1 was the first version of windows (there was a 1.0 but it had so many bugs that I don't think it ever got sold).
This version would have probably been an option around the time of the IBM PS/2 (I have certainly used a PS/2 with win 1.1).
Windows 2.0 was a sort of step back as it did not allow overlapping windows (due to apple trying to patent the look and feel of 'their' OS (we'll forget that they got all their ideas from XEROX and thus ended up having no leg to stand on!).

I surprised at 1.1/2.1 though as they have no built in networking support (only 3.11 for workgroups/NT and onwards have it).

And also we know what GUI they are running but what variant of DOS re they running :D

You've got your history slightly muddled there. 1.01 was the first released one, rather than 1.1, and it was the one without overlapping windows. By 2.0 they had managed to sort out their dispute with Apple (at least, I believe Microsoft thought they had — I seem to recall they were actually later sued by Apple over this very thing. Whether or not it was successful I don't recall.)

They weren't successful, turns out you cannot sue for ideas 'borrowed' from another company.

If that's the case why aren't many more great ideas from other companies reused? I can think of great design ideas that Microsoft could use to improve their office suite for example.

I find it fascinating that such old OSs are still in use.

So they ever write updates for the software or is it good enough such things are not required?

Unfortunately software patents are really a thing in America. IANAL but I believe by many interpretations of the law they're not legal in the EU, but I think people still try.

As others said, some of these OSes are likely to be Windows CE rather than vanilla Windows, which is quite a bit newer. Still pretty old though, with those version numbers.

There was 5733+5847 on the 2C46 1442 Reading to London Waterloo, which apart from once last week I'm not aware of happening in recent weeks. Having said that, there seems to be no short formations on Reading services, instead happening on suburbans!

Today (Saturday) I'll hopefully be going on the whole Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside all stations via Hounslow service, assuming it is a 455 like last year though :P

Back to 458/5 topic, there seems to be 1 diagram short formed per day recently.

Meanwhile, the Modern Railways Twitter feed posted this nugget:
458/0 MTIN 200,000+. 458/5 MTIN 4,000. Moral: don't mess with doors.

Not sure how the doors link into all of it but if the numbers are true then it does point to a repeat of their original entry to service :o

Yeah saw that 455 it was on the 0812 Reading to Waterloo.I had two red door faults (on desiro) due to the Ascot mob although thankfully the faults did clear.I seem to remember having trouble on a rugby Sunday and having to get out and push the doors shut for interlock some years back.

They introduced ASDO, to automatically choose the number of doors to open based on the station and the driver's stopping position. This has had a few teething problems, to say the least.

Not really the week to be doing short formations down the Reading road. One passenger complained to me that he had missed 5 trains at Virginia Water because they were so packed.Wondered why they dont just do shuttles to Ascot (instead of letting them run down to Reading) on the specials but obviously they have enough whizz kids working out the pathing and how it all runs so they don't need me.;)

There is a lot of people that go to Royal Ascot from Reading, as quite a few of them can be seen in the pub next to the station before then getting on a train.

Yeah,I knew that.Empties or fast to Reading? Sure the railway has done some sort of variation in the last 150 years.

Actually saw them at Reading yesterday about 1330 but there weren't so many.I must have just hit it at a crunch time.

I saw what appeared to be a Juniper carriage, either being lifted on, or taken of, a low loader lorry at Wimbledon yards last night around 2100 hours.

Will the conversions of the remaining ones be finished before they turn their attention to repairing the fire damage on 458501?

There seemed to be a 485/5 in the sidings North of Clapham Junction, a 485/5 in the shed and two more in the sidings earlier this evening. Are they not used so much at weekends?

There was a pair of units on Saturdays on the Hounslow route, not sure if it still runs after the May timetable change. There also appears to be a pair of units on Windsor services, I only know about it because Journeycheck showed a diagram of services as 5 cars instead of 10 today. Unless it was a special service today?
