14 units are required for the off-peak service. Currently, 10 are 458/0s and 4 450s. Unless there have been changes to the diagrams this week, the remaining two 458/0s are used in the peaks, which probably explains the short formations so far this week.

Next week is Royal Ascot week, which sees a huge increase in off-peak diagrams on the Reading line. Should be interesting...

The other day there were three short formed diagrams, two being all-day ones.

Today sees the first 455 pair use for several weeks, which is also accompanied by a short formed diagram. Surely there must be enough 450s available on a Saturday?

Those in the know will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's to do with maximum contracted mileage for the 450s and 444s with Siemens.

It looks like another pair of diagrams went from 458/0 to 450 last week. I believe now that the peak/off-peak split of 450s on Reading diagrams is now 14/6 and the 458/0s just 10/8.

This means that as noted above, the other day SWT were only able to muster a measly 7 out the remaining 12 458/0s for service.

Ascot is probably the least of SWT's worries with regard to the 458 project.

The opening match of the rugby world cup in September has been scheduled for a 20.00 kick off on a Friday evening ( 18th ) at Twickenham.

Now, a 20.00 kick off means the 30,000 or so fans will be travelling mostly via Waterloo between about 17.00 and 19.00.... That could be a very interesting evening peak that day...

I wonder if SWT will arrange for 450s to operate the line at that time (can the Reading-Waterloo route handle 12 car 450s?)

I believe Twickenham can handle 12 car 450's, but there is a few other stations like Martins Heron near to where I live that cannot handle 12 car 450's.

I suspect that there will be stock permitting Waterloo - Twickenham shuttles being run either with two 4 car class 455's, 2 5 car 458/5 or 2 4 car Class 450. The only other alternative is that stock will be hired in from somewhere in some for?

With regards to Ascot, like the above details for Twickenham I presume that that is going to be a Waterloo - Ascot shuttle service.

You also have to bear in mind that there will also be some special excursion trains from various places coming into Ascot between Tuesday and Saturday during Royal Ascot.

Living in the within the area where Ascot resides, I can safely say that it is going to be a nightmare time both on the trains and on the roads.

Errr.. where would such stock and the paths for any extra movements come from at that time on a Friday? It's the evening peak...

This is the plan for Ascot:
Royal Ascot Information - 16-20 June 2015

From Tuesday 16 until Saturday 20 June the annual Royal Ascot race meeting is being held at Ascot racecourse. On these days, all trains through Ascot on the Waterloo to Reading and Ascot to Aldershot/Guildford routes are likely to be extremely busy, especially between 09:00 and 14:00 and between 16:30 and 21:00.

The following alterations will be in place:

Tuesday to Friday
- Additional trains will run to Ascot from Waterloo and Reading before the meeting and from Ascot to Reading and Waterloo after the meeting.
- The 17:05 Waterloo to Aldershot via Ascot train will be diverted and will run from Ascot to Reading. An additional connecting train will run at 18:04 from Ascot to Guildford via Aldershot and there will be an additional train from Ascot to Guildford leaving at 18:53.

Saturday
Additional trains will run to Ascot from London Waterloo and Reading before the meeting and from Ascot to Reading and London Waterloo after the meeting. In order to provide the trains and crew to run these services, the following changes will be in effect:

London Waterloo - Dorking
The South West Trains service to Dorking will be withdrawn from late morning to mid evening. During this time, passengers should use Southern services between Leatherhead and Dorking to connect with alternative South West Trains services via Epsom. South West Trains tickets will be valid on the connecting Southern trains.

London Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside
A revised timetable will run on this route from mid morning to mid evening. During this time, trains to and from Windsor will run via Brentford and Hounslow and will leave London Waterloo at different times to normal. Passengers to and from Richmond and Twickenham will need to change trains at Staines.

London Waterloo to Chertsey, Addlestone and Weybridge
The train service on this route will be withdrawn from mid morning to mid evening. During this time, a bus service will run between Virginia Water and Weybridge, connecting with other trains running between London Waterloo and Virginia Water.

I'm not aware of any station on the Windsor lines that can fit more than 10 cars (of ~20m coach length), some of them less, especially out towards Reading.

Will be interesting to see what happens, as there won't be spare stock or paths, as mentioned above.

Can they modify other services or run replacement buses like they do for Weybridge to Virginia Water section of line for the Saturday at Royal Ascot.

I cannot see them asking people that have paid up to many £100's pounds to be going to Ascot to use a replacement bus service somehow!!!....:D

Other years, the extra services have ran Waterloo - Reading, with limited stops between Reading and Ascot.

The weekday timetable is on the SWT website. It's the usual Ascot week service of 4tph Waterloo to Reading and 4tph Reading to Ascot until the start of the first race.

Yup and I have got an additional turn on Friday and possibly my last chance to drive a 458/0 or more than one set the way the diagram is written out (unless I fall into a desiro set yet again)Got it of an A/O turn and it's quite a long job with a bit if faffing about.Hmmm not sure im too keen with mixing it with all the toffs.:p
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
ADDITIONAL:

I was told today that the 458/0s are running Windows 1.1
and the 458/5s are running Windows 2.0.I didn't even know these versions of Windows ever existed.
I know for a fact that the desiro's are running Windows 3.11.

as I have said before windows 1.1 was the first version of windows (there was a 1.0 but it had so many bugs that I don't think it ever got sold).
This version would have probably been an option around the time of the IBM PS/2 (I have certainly used a PS/2 with win 1.1).
Windows 2.0 was a sort of step back as it did not allow overlapping windows (due to apple trying to patent the look and feel of 'their' OS (we'll forget that they got all their ideas from XEROX and thus ended up having no leg to stand on!).

I surprised at 1.1/2.1 though as they have no built in networking support (only 3.11 for workgroups/NT and onwards have it).

And also we know what GUI they are running but what variant of DOS re they running :D

Honest,I never have heard of it before today although I did know about Windows 3.11.Im told the processor is similar to a Commodore 64 chip. Not sure about the memory but I do know it is bloody slow.:p

Windows 95 was my first operating system apart from the Amiga.

Sounds like windows CE. it basically runs on an ARM processor and is also used for the Voyager's TMS

It does not run on DOS

Also I'm trying to find out the Max Speed of a 458/0,is it 100mph?

I thought it was 90mph and if not im bloody going senile.I read everywhere on the internet it's 100mph although I've never done more than 90mph anyway.

Anyway with any luck I will get on one (or two sets) on Friday, possibly for the last time.

Windows CE would explain it, ARM is pretty much the defacto standard for CE based applications. but if the performance of the processor is said to be similar to a Z80 it would seem like an 8086 is being used (I don't think CE can run on a Z80) rather than an ARM processor of similar vintage (i.e. ARM1/2) as it would be a lot more powerful than a Z80/i8086. (IIRC 4X faster clock for clock than a 286 and only 1/10th of a watt!)

Also all non NT/CE versions of windows run on top of DOS and require an x86 processor.

The maximum speed of 458/0 is 90, you should know by now that Wikipedia is written by ill informed goons.

458s were designed and built with a maximum speed of 100mph, but SWT 'restricted' to 90mph (I think when they were diagrammed/relegated onto the Windsor lines) the only 'restriction' being the writing in the cabs and reducing the maximum power output to 45%ish.

When 8001 and 8002 were taken on by GX as a spare set they were derestricted and allowed to run at 100mph, I don't think they were used much, if at all and when they returned to SWT 8002 was restricted to match the rest of the fleet but 8001 always seemed a bit 'quick' compared to all the others.

100mph on SN metals? I don't think so. Nowhere is cleared for 100mph over there.
