No.I split it.The rear train was knackered.(450040) no aircon on whole 4 car unit as one set of aux's had gone down out of two. Also had a DMC set of motors not working.Had to take it to clapped out yard.I turned the lights off as passengers were getting confused on plat 19.Not sure of front unit number as I was in a bit of a hurry to split them.I had asked the guard of the arriving train (@1704) what the problem was and also found out myself by accessing the TMS although it didn't tell me about the motors on the CE DMC.

Passengers are not very tolerant at times and take it as personal although it's not meant to upset them.Train left slightly early (with permission) as it was well overcrowded and also taken off screens ten minutes before departure im told.

When I got 450040 to the yard 458015 was there.Im sure it hasn't moved in over four days as I saw it in the same spot on Friday.

Oh dear, quite a failure there. If only the 450s were specified with the emergency window hoppers for such cases, as the 458s that preceded them had :(. I did see on Twitter about the early removal of service from board due to the overcrowding. Why do I get the feeling that many treated it as the last service ever for their stations? :?

A few minutes ago I did see a single 458 unit at "Clapped Out Yard", probably the same one, as well as a 450 by the buffers and one near P6, nothing else there (although a 458 pair was beginning to enter and a 459 wasn't too far behind).

Interesting that the train was allowed to leave early. The other week the 18.44 stopping service from Surbiton to Woking had to skip stations between Waterloo and Surbiton due to a broken down train.

It therefore had to arrive into platform 3 early. Despite it blocking the platform used by the 18.40 it was held until it's 18.44 departure time. This delayed the 18.40 which missed it's path into Woking. Given there is an 18.48 also stops at all the stations in between Surbiton and Woking I had hoped they would let the 18.44 go early.

I'm wondering if that 450 on Reading tonight eventually formed the 20.12 to Basingstoke as that was 4 carriages tonight and busy. I don't know if it's usually 4 carriages.

Not sure if it was from the above incident but there was at least two Reading - London trains cancelled this morning. I needed to go into London, but was fortunately on the 07:42 from Martins Heron. The trains at 08:05 & 08:35 where showing as being cancelled.

Anyway, back on subject. On my way back to Waterloo I noticed 458535 in platform 19 alongside 458019 in platform 18.

15:22 to Weybridge had door problems when 458 503 came into platform 16 to join I think 458 531. Engineer called and the units were recoupled with what I would call extreme force. The 10 car train left about 20 minutes late running fast from Putney to Feltham. Will these units ever work properly?

Tightlock couplers do need abit of welly sometimes to get them to lock together. They can certainly take some abuse that's their design.

458/5 have dellner but I wouldn't whack them.
458/0 have tightlock.

I keep forgetting this. So used to Tightlock. Certainly don't want to wack a dellner. Put together with a firm push to hold though whilst couple button pressed.

Yeah I split and attached a few /0s years ago, more like a 455. Dellners is soft and gentle and the train does the work. 458/5s haven't actually got dellner couplers, something similar, which I can't remember now....

Scharfenberg.

But Dellner are basically the same device made under licence from Scharfenberg, it is a standardised design.

Are some 450s still covering for 458/5s?

I ask because the late night Dorking ( the 23.09 off Waterloo and 00.04 ecs back to Wimbledon ) for the last couple of nights has been a single 450 instead of a pair.

Incidentally I loved the PIS display last night on the ecs; instead of saying either "Not in service" or being left as "Dorking" it said "Bedtime". :)

I was on 458531 and 458503>(For the first time as a 5).

503 is already fitted with DAS.I saw a notice that 159104 is also fitted.
503 cab layout on the left is different.Door open and close button/bell button and interlock light (on the left) gone.Washer/Wiper controls moved to right side right, near radio.Screen for DAS replacing buttons that have been removed.Looks like a tablet screen.WSP lamp replaced with smaller WSP lamp indicator. Now only one signal bell button and ineterlock light instead of two.(on the right)

502+504 were out and about + Ex gats out of which I could guess by their windows.505 in Wimbledon yard visible from main line.Could work it out by the numbers on the side.

458502 was led by 458536 on the 2R45 1615 London Waterloo to London Waterloo, saw them at Putney on the return.

Meanwhile, the 2S56 1737 Weybridge to London Waterloo was 10 coaches instead of 5, knew it didn't seem right when I heard the announcement at Hounslow (I got off the 1707 from Waterloo, managed to get one of the 455 trips today :P).

You can tell which coach came from a 460 on the former 458/0s, those windows are very different (only when you are up close to it).

Do the power sockets still work in between the seats in the former 1st class ends?

One set seemed to be running on a Windsor diagram this morning, diverted upto Windsor from Weybridge to fit in the additional Reading services?

Plus the original six all coaches have the same windows as the adopted coach.501-530 have the original windows apart from adopted coach.

505+510 outside Wim Shed tonight @ 2050.Dunno about power sockets.

Seemed to be a fair few 10-cars out today. The Windsor services were indeed diverted Weybridge services. The normal Windsor services were diverted to Reading. As a result Windsor trains were interworking with the Hounslow Loop trains in both directions. Seemed to be a mix of everything out; 450s, 455s and 458/5s. With the diagrams not serving Chertsey like they normally do 8-car 455s could be used on the diagrams. Not sure what was on the Reading services but again imagine it was a mix of 450s, 455s and 458s.

It was a mix of 450, 455 and 458/0's on the Reading route and I would imagine it will be the same over the Easter Weekend due to the extra services which are being run with regards to the engineering work at Reading.

And there seemed to be a FGW 125 parked up at Clapham Junction. Which looked weird.

The power sockets are removed as part of the refit. Presumably they are being stored somewhere to go back in when they move back to the Reading line on arrival of the Desiro City fleet.

Was it really necessary to remove them? What harm would they have done left in place? I mean the 444s have them in standard class.

Looking at the 1228 from Waterloo as an example, it is the usual Windsor service stops as far as Staines (Vauxhall, Clapham Junction, Putney, Richmond, Twickenham, Whitton, Feltham, Ashford, Staines) then Egham, Virginia Water, Ascot, Bracknell, Wokingham and Reading.

There are also the 0722 and 0752 oddities: all stations via Hounslow until Virginia Water, then Ascot, Bracknell, Wokingham and Reading.

Why are South West Trains not prepared to simply add in the xx05/xx35 peak path to Reading rather than messing around with the services to Windsor and Weybridge to provide an enhanced service on the Reading line. How many days this year have Chertsey and Addlestone been left without a train service this year?

Just passed Doncaster, looks like another 458/5 will soon be on the move south, sitting outside the works all shiny and blue. Didn't manage to catch the number.

I was thinking about that yesterday. It was an issue with paths during the mainline diverts, but that isn't the case here as you mentioned. It can't be lack of stock either, as there will be all the 455s only used on peak extras, as well as both colours of 456, before we get to any 450/458/459. That reason was given last year during the Ascot races, that stock was needed for extra services. Therefore the only logical issue I can think of is to do with finding crew .

That's definitely the explanation they have used on the SWT webchat when it has come up before. Presumably it keeps the overall number of drivers/guards rostered for the day the same as a normal Sat or Sun or whatever...
