they preusmably by now have no doors and no windows. I'd guess they'll be stripped for parts. There's only four- they're of little use to anyone. Scrap it is.

Interesting to note for any 458/0 fans, looks like UK railtours are planning some sort of farewell tour over parts of the 3rd rail land they don't normally see passenger service on.

The old luggage cars of the 460s look so sad at Doncaster.

Sounds interesting. Any idea of the date yet?

The other set passed me at Barnes Bridge around 1335. We were about 5-10 late due to waiting for an ex-Reading to cross in front at Waterloo, then a few door problems. Busy due to match at Brentford. Also had station displays mentioning that it continued to Whitton and Twickenham afterwards!

Haha, I've seen loads of instances of that  almost done it myself the first time I went on one!

Guard was doing his nut but I just laughed.I know I shouldn't have.

A couple of ex-458/0s out on test/mileage accumulation today, to and from Reading.

They're out most days and they keep getting in the way of passenger services and are a right PITA, they should run them at mid-late evening when it's a lot quieter, so not to delay fare paying passengers.

If they need test milage and it doesn't matter on what route, could they run them late evening or overnight on the SWML all the way between Waterloo and Weymouth?

The 458/0s are cleared all the way to Weymouth, cant see any reason the 458/5s would be any different!

Perhaps they should run a couple of Weymouth services using 458/5s so passengers across the SWT network can experience these newly refurbished trains.

Is there any services between Waterloo and Weymouth that are done by 450s which could be done by 458s for a few weeks (how many out and back journeys would they need to do to clock up the required mileage?

Nope, unless SWT feel like paying compensation to everyone on those WEY services with a first class ticket.

Forgot about those people. That's the end of that idea.

Just occurred to me. I believe the Aldershot line now uses rolling stock without first class. Does that mean when the 450s ran on it, they had first class declassified?

Assuming you mean the Ascot-Camberley-Aldershot service? Nope, when operated with a 450/458 mix First Class was very definitely enforced! ISTR that the "declassification" happened when the 456s were introduced, and posters about refund arrangements were put up at various stations.

In theory I suppose you could run a converted 458 on the Camberley service, but you wouldn't want to. The platforms are only four cars long and you'd have to overhang the level crossing at Camberley.

Well if they can refund Ascot line passengers, in theory they could refund Weymouth ones too. I imagine though there were less Ascot first class passengers than from Weymouth.

I saw 458536 at about 12:25pm on its way to reading being pulled by another 458/5 in front of it. Was this a test run or a service run that they were doing at all please?

Probably about the same number, its just that the Weymouth passengers pay for their journey! ;)

and we don't want you French rubbish down here, 450's are bad enough esp. when you've been on one for over 3 hours (during the summer, first summer deal train back, had a 444 on the back but as the train was splitting not much use)

Would have been a test run. 5 out of 6 458/5 diagrams covered yesterday afternoon. 502, 503 and 532 all out of service then I presume.

In what way are the 458s worse then the 450s? I personally consider both to be "commuter layout" trains

We don't want either, at least the 450's are more likely than the 458/5's to actually get you to where you are going without going on strike :D.

Well the 458/5's are rebuilt 458's to resemble class 450's, so other than the transmission equipment you should not notice the difference...;)

But seriously, living not far from a station on the London Waterloo - Reading line, I have felt more comfortable on a train when it has been a class 450. Although, I must admit I can safely get to sleep as long s I have got a seat on a class 458, the 450s do feel more comfortable.

Thanks. It looked like a test run as there seemed to be no one on the train.

It's funny how long distance commuters moan about 450s and Cobham line commuters comment on how posh 450s are. I admit they were sat in declassified first class when they made that posh comment but I don't think that makes much difference.

I'd rather a 450 than rolling stock with no loos.

Do the units of the class 458 fleet currently have ducting/conduit installed to allow for potential future conversion to overhead or would they need to be striped down to the base shell to be converted (in which case it would probably be cheaper to go for a new build)?

The original 458s (and 458/5s converted from 458/0s) have a pantograph well, the ex460 units dont!
