Just looking at a pic of one on the net, that grey metal area under the driver's side cab window, it's a shame that it either painted blue or had a blue panel attached to it. It seems to stick out like a sore thumb a bit.

Is it possible that SWT might eventually go through the process of getting them cleared for the Weymouth to Waterloo line.

Reading on Wikipedia it says:

It will involve replacing the existing retractable gangways and couplers between coaches. The cab ends both on ex-458 and on ex-460 driving vehicles will be redesigned to be compatible with the Class 450 Desiro fleet. New Train Management System software will be installed to improve reliability. Internal refurbishment will include reconfiguring the seating layout to provide more standing room for passengers.[8] Traction units will be re-geared from 100 mph (161 km/h), not required on the services for which the trains will be used, to 75 mph (121 km/h) maximum to avoid overheating.

Does that mean they could be operated coupled to a Desiro in service or would that be for emergencies or ECS moves?

I haven't actually been on a journey yet where the PIS has been working. What's the problem with it?

Also today, the guard did not make an announcement about the short platform at Feltham, resulting in much panic in the rear two coaches, and also had the locked the inter-unit gangway. Hmmm - not impressive.

No problems with the PIS now as far as I am aware, I worked the train on Monday and had no issues. Can't say why the guard didn't do an announcement at Feltham, but if you've spent all of your career working 8 coach trains it's easy to think they may have forgotten that they have 10 coaches.

These units are currently being double crewed at the moment, we have had to lock them (the inter unit gangways) out of use from time to time when we have had to discuss or report a problem as the cabs are now very cramped when the gangways are open. But for the most part they are available for the public to use, and as Via bank has said you need to push the cab door in order to gain access to the gangway.

They are already physically 'cleared' to Weymouth, but what would be the point of operating 75 mph units on such services?

(IIRC 458s and 460s had both been to Weymouth anyway for DC regeneration tests, and 458s regularly ran to Bournemouth for various mods and refurbs, so there'd be no real issues with 458/5 being route cleared as well.)

Coupling to Desiros is for emergency rescue purposes only. As was discussed much earlier in what has now become a long thread multiple working with 450s is not provided for.

Had they remained as 100 MPH units, I could've seen them going on select services on the Pompey Direct to appease commuters, however as 75MPH units they're suburban only.

Yep, the trains are more than likely going to end up doing Waterloo - Windsor and possibly Waterloo - Reading routes.

What about on a slow train if they ever needed to free up a 450 to either work with a 444 or do a fast train on it's own?

The 458/5s are already all going to be in use of the Windsor Lines. There will be crew knowledge issues if you try to run them elsewhere. Even if they were still 100mph units it's very unlikely that they would have run to Portsmouth.

First time on one of these units today - not impressed. As mentioned above one unit out of service so only a 5 coach train in the evening peak, two sets of doors not working on the remaining unit (front set in the rear coach, and front set in the front coach).

yeah thought 458532 was nowhere to be seen.

Anyone got the original unit number and coach numbers and what they were/are being converted into?

You can find all the coach numbers here: http://abrail.co.uk/emuformations.htm

As you can see the coaches are retaining their original numbers. Individual 458/5s are being formed from vehicles from a number of different 460s.

Thanks, want to keep up with my favourite units apart from the 455's and desiro's that is.;)

Why is a 317 Named "Ilford Depot" whereas the 315's have been their all their lives?

I was at Ilford when the 315's were brand spanking new.

Work has started on extending Platform 4 at Wandsworth Town, the extension is on the country end.

Looks like there were some issues at Whitton last night with doors on the front 3 coaches not opening, guard didn't realise this and as train started to pull away the passcom was activated, leading to things getting a bit heated (if you are to believe the Twitter reports :P)

I wonder if the passenger was explaining block signalling to the guard!

Why do you say that? The social media officer has directed the 'customers' towards the appropriate channels with which to take forward their complaints. If they do, and they are found to have grounds then hopefully they will be acted upon in some way.

I agree. No one is being rude or offensive, and SWT have had a potential incident flagged up that possibly may not otherwise be reported, so what's disgusting about it?

Apart from the first one calling the guard effing rude, but hey its okay for the staff to be abused because of a train fault isn't it. I notice the tw@ter team didn't say anything about it!

It comes across like that but when you read in conjunction with the other tweets its clear that it's the guard that is being accused of calling a man 'a f**king rude man', and not the passengers calling the staff that.

Does your axe even have a blade to grind anymore? ;)

It seems to me that the guard was not having a good day but despite this he/she should have remained calm and professional.

Your making assumptions there. How do you know that's what happened? Bottom line you don't. That's why you have investigations, you work out what happened not judge it on a few angry tweets that is just one single side of the story.

THIS

Social media has been used in the past to make allegations about my own conduct, yet after investigation it was proven to be someone else completely. Yet users on Twitter were still more than happy to hurl abuse at me because they had one persons side of a story.
