Given what a state the cabs were in even before Gemini did the AC Traction conversion, I do wonder what it would be a museum of? How to make 50 mistakes in your cab mods?
Maybe if they got two, one of which was 442219 or 20 then they could do a before and after on what the cabs did look like and what they should look like...?

Seeing the photo of the 442424 cab obviously shows that the earlier list is now out of date re scrapped vehicles.
The last status list I saw had the following cars extant:
77382 from 442401 to be preserved, but still at Eastleigh
71822, 71846, 77386 and 77410 from 442405 at Eastleigh
71824, 71848 from 442407 at Eastleigh
71829, 71853, 77393 and 77417 from 442412 at Eastleigh
71841, 71865, 77405 and 77429 from 442424 at Eastleigh
Is it correct to assume that all bar 77382 are now cut up?

i did wonder about that
looks like it was done with a digger and a sheer attachment and ripped off said a thousand times before but shame 1 complete train couldnt be saved
would take up quite a lot of space though
is that mostly complete one still in eastleigh or was this a cab from it?

AIUI that’s mostly how they do the work at Eastleigh. It’s a relatively small scale operation.i did wonder about that

That's interesting, thanks. I don't know of any similar types of preservation by anyone else, so the plot thickens.

It seems that only two cars from both 2405 and 2424 possibly still exist,but I may be wrong.In addition I can't find details anywhere that 62954 (2418) and 77400(2419) from those latterly at Wolverton have been broken up either.Can anyone confirm if they still exist or not? The other remaining vehicles from 2407 and 2412 remain at Eastleigh Works. Quite what may be planned for them seems unclear given all the motor coaches have been cut up...unless 62954 remains?
i asked someone online who was working one of the front cars, but they said they couldnt tell me about any other vehicles at eastleigh due to commercial confidentiality so that may be part of the reason no one knows whats happening with the other vehicles, just seems odd theyve hung around so long when others have been scrapped

So is nobody preserving a 442 set? It would be nice if at least one five coach set was preserved. They have so much history and were great popular trains. There were so many 142/143/144 preserved so i am not sure why there has been such little interest in 442 from preserved railways?

I don't think preserving a complete 442 would've been feasible. I think all the motor coaches have been scrapped anyway.
Apparently one of the class 442's will be working the Purley Gates service on Sundays. Trial run, they might use an old class 33 to haul it if they can't get the 3rd rail sorted out.

Yes, apparently so.
They have. The unwanted ones at Eastleigh were stripped (then scrapped) to keep the SWR active fleet running, before they started to re-motor their fleet… and we know what happened after that.
Even the NRM lost interest in their DTS from the record holding 442401, hence its sale and subsequent preservation with Northumbria Rail.

I suspect a relatively modern, power-door, air-con EMU isn't likely to appeal to the typical family day out market at most preserved lines. With no third rail you'd need a loco with enough electrical output for the onboard systems, and a fixed length 5-car set makes inflexible hauled stock too.
But it's a moot point anyway, since there aren't any complete sets left.
Because it's an EMU - there is rarely interest in them from preserved railways as they generally aren't of any practical use, and that becomes more pronounced with newer units as they are increasingly impractical / impossible to use as hauled stock.
Pacers are a completely different matter - self-powered, small enough for any preserved line, and of fairly simple design and construction.

The plot thickens. I know people are rather coy about what's possibly planned for those remaining trailers. I didn't realise there is still a power car remaining; assuming that the above list is correct.
i thought or saw from photos anyway there was 1 set in eastleigh left (in an older livery) apart from the middle power car, its cropped up in a few photos in the background now, assuming its still there as said it seems to have hung around for a long time

There’s some things that don’t look right. Couple and uncouple buttons yet there were no automatic couplers for the electrics or brakes. Just a Buckeye, external brake pipes and a 27 way jumper.
Passcomm override when the 442 passcomm is the standard Mk3 handle that directly vents the brake pipe.
