I have just found in the allocations and diagrams folder a thread on Class 442 scrap moves - https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/442-scrap-workings.218149/

It documents well the gradual movement of 442 units from Bournemouth to Wolverton where they are being stripped before onward movement to Sims Newport by road. I gather there are no units left at Bournemouth now.

However, it is not easy to track through that thread which units/vehicles have actually been dispatched to Sims or have been broken up more recently at Eastleigh by Raxstar.

My incomplete notes currently have the following situation:

442401 - 4 coaches broken up at Eastleigh - 77382 to be preserved by Northumbria Rail Ltd
442402 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442403 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442404 - at Eastleigh
442405 - 4 coaches stored at Eastleigh - 62944 broken up there
442406 - broken up at Sims Newport
442407 - 4 coaches stored at Eastleigh - 62943 broken up there
442408 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442409 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442410 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442411 - at Eastleigh
442412 - 4 coaches stored at Eastleigh - 62947 broken up there
442413 - at Eastleigh
442414 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442415 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442416 - broken up at Sims Newport
442417 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442418 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442419 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442420 - at Wolverton - was used as brake runner for movements
442421 - broken up at Eastleigh
442422 - at Wolverton for component stripping
442423 - broken up at Sims Newport
442424 - 4 coaches stored at Eastleigh - 62960 broken up there

My core uncertainties are
  1. whether any units I have as at Eastleigh have been broken up there or moved to Wolverton?
  2. which vehicles have left Wolverton for Newport

Any help very welcome.

After spending last week shuttling back and forth between Bournemouth and Wolverton 66703, 73107 and 73128 returned light engine to Eastleigh on Thursday, leaving 2420 at Wolverton, strongly suggesting that there are no further units to make the move north. 66703 remained at Eastleigh yesterday, the 73s went back light to Tonbridge on Friday.

Finding moves from Wolverton to Newport will be a matter of luck, being on the M1, M25, M4 route at the right time to see the lorry conveying the doomed vehicle. Once at Newport I think the vehicles are broken up virtually on arrival. Very rare to see photos from inside the yard, it is within the security cordon of Newport docks, so cannot even take a stroll round to ‘peak over the fence’.

Well, hopefully they pull off more than just the traction kit at Wolverton, there's a lot of very expensive things fitted to them now.

That should be 66722, not 703.

Thanks very much.

At some point in the future it should be clear when all vehicles have left Wolverton for scrapping. Whether all go to Newport or some go to other Sims sites we may never know.

Which vehicles remain at Eastleigh and which have been scrapped there may also only become clear over time.

It's a shame that Carl Watson's photo site is no longer active. That was a great insight in to what got scrapped at Eastleigh.

I've wondered why the motor coaches only of some of the units at Eastleigh got scrapped. Perhaps a future for the rest as some sort of loco healed stock [tongue firmly in cheek].

Indeed, I go in there regularly and still don't have a clue what's in there or what's happening!

More likely the copper in the motors made it worth the effort where as the others weren't really costing anything to store?

The Blood and Custard website gives a detailed run down of the Class 442 disposals here: BloodandCustard - 5 WES 442 stock

Of the 18 former SWR sets, seven are showing as having gone to Newport for scrap: sets 2402/03/04/06/11/16/23.

There will certainly be some changes required to both list and page over the next few weeks, as the stored 442 situation remains fluid Wolverton and Eastleigh; DTS 77412 (from 442407) was disposed of by Raxstar last week.

Looks like there is still a unit with four trailers extant in GatEx livery at Eastleigh. Viewed this afternoon (22nd), but unable to see the numbers. Any idea which unit?P1220714 (2).JPG

I believe that could be coaches of U.2424, pretty sure there are other coaches of U.2405 & U.2407 at the rear of the works, you can see some of them from the Ports line but you have to be quick as bushes soon get in your way.

From the list it would appear that all of the motor carriages have now been scrapped, and therefore we have affirmatively had the last ever self powered move of a 442. Can anyone confirm which unit that would have been and when this took place?

It’s interesting that all the surviving carriages are ones that were never refurbished for SWR, in the cases of 4205, 4207 and 4212, they appear not to have worked for GTR either given the last operation dates for those units from 2007. I wonder why those ones have survived longer than those refurbished for SWR.

Small point of note regarding 442401 DTS 77382 “Donated to the National Collection”, it was originally due to be saved for the National Collection, however it has since been de-listed (unwanted by the NRM). It is now preserved by Northumbria Rail at Eastleigh Works.

I'm not convinced about the quoted last operation dates - there's plenty of evidence to show 2405, 2407, and 2412 all working for Southern/GTR long after 2007 (filtered to only show pictures taken(!) from 1/1/08 to 1/1/16)

Regarding the motor coaches, those left at Eastleigh lost their motor coaches to provide spares for the active SWR fleet. Of course, the sad irony in this is now the ‘active’ SWR fleet are gone themselves.

Most of the movements on Bournemouth Depot have been under the locomotive. But...
I suspect the last self powered movement was the AC Traction Prototype 442 419 (I think) in SPZ testing.

Any further updates to this list?
A picture appeared on Instagram of what looked very much like a complete salvaged 442 cab on a low loader (from U.2424 I think), I understand it may be off to preservation somewhere?

Drove them from 1992 till 2007 but never got a second chance when they came back.
Even had a train failure on one of them in Jan 2007 at Branksome.Door interlock problems.

One claim is Northumbria Rail at Bedlington, I don't see any confirmation as yet from their end though
