Forgive me if someone has already posted/asked this. But can there ever be a 18-car, 20-car, or even 22-car Class 390 coupled running? I've seen this on RTT but I assume it's just a mistake/temporary change?
Not in service, no. I believe a 18 carriage might be possible for rescue purposes.Forgive me if someone has already posted/asked this. But can there ever be a 18-car, 20-car, or even 22-car Class 390 coupled running? I've seen this on RTT but I assume it's just a mistake/temporary change?
A Class 390 has run in multiple with two Voyagers on a test. I have a feeling two 390s have run in multiple on test as well, but I might be confusing that with the YouTube video of the Voyager test.Forgive me if someone has already posted/asked this. Do you mean coupled, rather than run in multiple? AFAIK they are different multiple working systems on the two fleets which means one cannot control the other, but they can couple mechanically for rescue purposes.A Class 390 has run in multiple with two Voyagers on a test.
For rescue and where gradient allows rescue.Do you mean coupled, rather than run in multiple? AFAIK they are different multiple working systems on the two fleets which means one cannot control the other, but they can couple mechanically for rescue purposes.

pendos have no coupler electrical boxes, so they can not run in multi with anything. they can mechanicaly couple, but air pipes have to used, to give you pneumatic control of the brakes. 2 driver & probably a technician would required for this, which is how the nwc drags worked.

Thanks for this, I was about to chime in and say, the most certainly do have electrical boxes unless those boxes on the couplers are dummies, but then what would be the point of that? Also videos above have shown that within its class it can run multi!![]()

Loco attachment for Pendolino drags was a grand performance and took almost 20 minutes.
While the loco’s auto coupler was an engineering marvel it still needed the man in marigolds to collect 2 large ETS cables and get on the ballast to plug them in one at a time
Pendo’s can’t and never have run in multiple. Instructions forbid coupling of electrical boxes. They can couple mechanically Pendo to Pendo for rescue purposes but to do so the list of other stuff to be done was pages long and never put into practice except for testing as far as I remember. The biggest problem was providing enough air to the failed unit. Thanks for this, I was about to chime in and say, the most certainly do have electrical boxes unless those boxes on the couplers are dummies, but then what would be the point of that? I believe the standby Loco contact is now for dead haul only, and its now forbidden to establish an ETS connection between the Loco & Pendo.
No ETS supply = no passengers allowed to travel on board.
So now every time one becomes disabled its a train-to-train evacuation before it can be hauled away.
Progress.......
Indeed & given the 800 V through the ETH cables from loco to stock are there auto coupler systems that can now incorporate these ? Ive not seen any. While the loco’s auto coupler was an engineering marvel it still needed the man in marigolds to collect 2 large ETS cables and get on the ballast to plug them in one at a time
They did run in multiple when they were being tested.Pendo’s can’t and never have run in multiple. Instructions forbid coupling of electrical boxes. They do, it’s just not used.pendos have no coupler electrical boxes, so they can not run in multi with anything. they can mechanicaly couple, but air pipes have to used, to give you pneumatic control of the brakes. 2 driver & probably a technician would required for this, which is how the nwc drags worked.

They did - the very last regular working, Saturdays only, ended in 2012.Didn't they used to drag Pendo's in and out of Holyhead with a 57 for a while?
