Isn't that because they are of a later design, i.e. they have a control system that is similar to the 379s rather than the 10+ year old 377/1s.

Not sure if this applies in normal service, but the 377/6 & /7 fleet is supposed to be compatible with earlier 377 builds.

Since there's more 387/1s than there are 377/5s, does that mean that more 365s will be replaced (as 21 units were planned to be released to GWR originally), or will the future Great Northern fleet be larger than originally planned?

Don't know tbh.

Is there any reason why the 387s were not specified to be compatible with 'traditional' Class 377s?

The 377/6, /7 fleets use the new build bodies but are backwards compatible as it was in the spec. The 387s were never supposed to stay so only ECS moves is permitted with things like passcom etc not working between units.

The reason behind this is its time to stop building units to a 90's spec, which is what the 377s are. This is why the 387 and 377 combo will never be in service. The 387s are much more of the original Aventra design than the Electrostar despite being official part of the latter family group. 345/710 are actually the second generation Aventra design.

to be honest when the "member of training staff" said Southern were getting the 387s and said they will be compatible with 377s i became scepticle!

Any ideas if tomorrows 10.30 Vic to Brighton (GX) will be 387/2?

Its impossible for the 387 and 377 to be compatible without completely rewiring one of them, so I don't think it'll ever happen. All that's needed is brake/motor control which is what we have now.

I think most people confuse GTR as Southern, especially the ex Southern staff, its not. GTR has the Southern brand but its as much the old Southern franchise as London Midland is/was.

Not a clue about tomorrow as I'm off at present but there will be some 387s out. Pretty sure its a 12 car but there *should* (I don't know for sure) only be one 12 car out this Saturday unlike last weekend.

ok cheers......

the person said within the next 4 years the 313s and 455s will be replaced by 387s and some other 377s..... we will take that with a very big pinch of salt then. I wouldnt surprise me for staff in this department to be "confused" lol

Currently no plans for the replacement of the 313/455 on Southern. There's enough new stock being introduced and new services to get working right without adding in more.

While it's not impossible the 313/455 will be replaced as GTR is a management contract but it's unlikely to happen. There of course changes to some of the 455 routes which has lead people to confuse with withdrawal.

A key difference being that when it was just Southern, they were actually good!

I see that the Fen Line Users Association have picked up a rumour (via Modern Railways mag) of the 387s coming to the King's Cross-Cambridge-King's Lynn service...

I accessed that from a mobile. Is really all just one big page of text? What a mess. My goodness, doesn't someone know how to register a free blog on WordPress or something and create separate pages?

It is, they are in need of some reformatting to say the least.

I have seen a 377 and 387 run ecstogetherr moving the 377 back to lovers walk

Furthermore
Today's 387/2 driver training will take place via Hove portslade and Worthing, not often where a GX unit goes

i was very disappointed to see they haven't put 1st class in correctly. It seems only 1 end of each unit is 1st like the old class 319s. i was really hoping after passenger feedback these brand new trains would have 1st on each end :(

Isn't it better to have a large first class area in one place in the unit than two small ones? First class is properly set up on the 387/2s.

Yes on the 387/2s (gatwick Express) 1st looks quite nice (although the seats are too skinny).

But FCC only use 387/1s which only have a small 1st on one end.

Just been reminded how luxurious First Class is on the 379s

to me would have made sense in hindsight for GX to get 379s... to have been ordered in the same batch as the Stansted units

First class is supposed to be bigger (look at where the frosted door is and the different seat covers) but on TL the requirement is only for a small portion at present

I think there is more First Class seating on the 700s

Class 379's reliability on 3rd rail has been down at zero% since their introduction.

More than a bit of hindsight, how many years is it since the 379s were ordered? (April 2009) Did anyone have any inkling that GatEx would need new stock at that time, the 460s were probably still in normal use on the off-peak service at that stage.

Just wondering where we are at with the delivery of the 387/2's? Does anyone have an update.

I'm also wondering how their introduction is going, other than the DOO issues. Have they had any unexpected trouble, how's staff and passenger reception?

The GatEx Twitter feed reveals a few comments both positive (WiFi; light & airy; sockets) and negative (fewer seats; seating less comfortable; poor First Class). All of which was quite predictable. Neither uproar, nor adulation.

I prefer the 387s, though I no longer bother upgrading to First Class as an occasional treat. I might return if they installed a coffee machine and undertook ticket checks.

As P5/6 at Gatwick will have a seperate gateline soon the likelyhood of on board ticket checks is tending to zero.
