They could skip Woolwich Dockyard ( and indeed a couple of slows will from August I believe) but the only problem is that it's growing quite quickly (about 10% increases per annum) and has a ton of housing coming within a 10 minute walking radius. Around 1000 homes. That's just Dockyard station. Woolwich Arsenal has 5000+ but the DLR and then Crossrail to aid.

Returning to the original topic of the thread, I saw 387220 and 387221 on test today at Brighton in the usual path from Bletchley TMD. Does anyone know how many of the 387/2s have made it into service so far?

IIRC something like 206/207/210/218/219 so far with 201-203 in services on Thameslink.

Many more than that have been in service.

I had 387205+387207 on 3 March and 387210+387215 on 7 April so that is 205 and 215 in service in addition to this list.

Going back through postings on various sources

ukmodernemu has reports of 207, 210, 215, 216 and 218 working last week. I saw 213 with 207 working on 21 March. There is a report of 211 working on 15 March and 214 on 31 March on the wnxx forum.

So that is at least 205/206/207/210/211/213/214/215/216/218/219 that have seen service, even if some have then gone back to store pending full introduction. 208 and 209 appeared to do a lot of training runs to Littlehampton. So just 204, 212, 217 and units above 219 unaccounted for?

206 hasn't been used for services as its been back to Derby for repair work, not branded and held off from service with GatEx at present. 219 was shown as not ready yet on the latest list (may be out of date by today). 208/209 are the official training units for Barnham drivers.

More changes coming soon to service. However I'm sure I saw a 12 car working today ECS from Gatwick northwards.

I took 206 and 219 from your list so we can take those off but I think the rest (ie 205/207/210/211/213/214/215/216/218) have positive sightings in service.

387216+387210+387207 forming the 2145 London Victoria to Gatwick Airport tonight. Almost empty.

The reduction in evening / overnight services for staff training has been suspended for the duration of the strike timetable.

218 went down the Seaford line as part of stock moves and route proving (as the branch has had no trains for a while it requires a check) before going to Lovers Walk Depot.

Have all the delivered units had the 'GX' branding applied?

Most of the ones I see in service do, but many I used to see about in the earlier days were just plain red, with no vinals at all.

I saw a couple of unbranded units at Farringdon two days ago.

the ones being used on Thameslink havent, the ones being used on GX have, simple really, unless anyone else know of an occasion otherwise.

201, 202 and 203 aren't branded because they aren't being used on Gatwick Express - the ones in use on Gatwick Express should all be branded.

387201/202/203/206/221/222 are all unbranded. The former three are on Thameslink with the latter three getting it at somepoint in the future. All other units are branded or will be branded at Bletchley.

Just found out why other units aren't entering service on the Gatwick Express it's because of this DOO row and making staff redundant hence the strikes that were experienced the previous 2 days.

Part one is actually false, no redundancies only displacement (major difference).

By other units, I'm guessing you mean the missed out one? Well 201-203 is not connected in any way to the DOO issue. Most of the the other units have been in service, the others haven't as as of yet they aren't commissioned or made ready for service. Again not connected to the DOO dispute. As for why they all aren't in service, that is in part because of the dispute but also in part because they aren't all planned to be in service yet anyway!

The strikes and the reasons behind the strikes were nothing to do with Gatwick Express at all.
There were some issues around DOO but these have been sorted and additional circuits will be added as soon as there are sufficient trained drivers etc.

The next phase of the 387/2 implementation starts on Tuesday, I'll post the circuit concerned tomorrow. There's also 2x442 going into warm storage at Eastbourne on Friday night

There is a lot more happening than that.

Gwr will do very well with these trains excellent internal layout

I actually don't find the seats uncomfortable and would rather have the generous legroom

Great legroom
Perfect window seat alignment
Tables
Plug sockets

Nor much to dislike

They are near enough perfect barring the first class being the same as standard and the standard class seating.. Just needs to be less hard.

I'm going to have to agree with this. They are quite comfortable and allow for decent leg room for taller people, but after a while you start having to fidget to stay comfortable.

As said previously I very much like the layout of the 387's, my only gripe being that the section designated "First Class" is an absolute joke as they've simply fitted some antimacassars and that's it. Compare it to for example with First Class on the 379's, which are 2+1 and actually feel different.

Other than that standard class is perfect I think, and no other gripes.

The planned additional services for Tuesday have now been postponed again, so still just the 1 diagram next week

Unless you know different, the dispute is about operation of trains of more than 10 cars as DOO. Introduction of 387s means the introduction of 4 car units to replace the 5 car 442s, so trains of 4, 8 or 12 cars will replace trains of 5 or 10 cars on Gatwick Express. Where traffic levels require that the 10 car 442s cannot be replaced by 8 car 387s, they will have to be 12 cars, so the issues around DOO have definitely not been sorted and have a lot to do with Gatwick Express.
