Any news when the first passenger working will be ?

I've seen mentions that it is due to be by the end of November, which is less than a week away.

Very soon indeed. Final preparations are being done this week and plan is for in service this month.

I managed to get some shots as well as they were sat in Montpelier sidings about 15:30.

387 108 & 107 had moved when I left Brighton on the 15:44 Hove shuttle but I don't know where too.

New trains for Thameslink and Gatwick Express
By Nigel Wordsworth

Bombardier is now well into the delivery phase of its order for 29 four-car Electrostar trains for the new Govia Thameslink franchise.

Around half of the ordered trains have been built and the first three have completed testing and have been transferred to Brighton Lovers Walk depot ready to be handed over to the operator. Services using the new trains, which will replace Class 319 vehicles on the Bedford to Brighton route, will commence next month.

At the same time, the new operator has confirmed that it is exercising an option on the contract to purchase a further 27 trains (108 cars) for use on Gatwick Express. These trains will have the same seating and luggage-storage arrangements but are likely to be rebranded in a red Gatwick Express livery.

There is also a second option for another 32 trains which may be taken up early next year.

One can’t help but wonder if this will be the last order for Bombardier’s Electrostar family with the new Aventra platform, as bought by Crossrail, waiting in the wings.

Didn't realise there was an option for an extra 32 trains. Not convinced there is enough Class 387s for Gatwick Express in the 1st order to be honest.

the additional 32 is interesting. Cambridge maybe? Current stated plan is for the 377/5s to go onto Cambridge Express - with both services each hour going to Kings Lynn- but that some 365s will be retained for Cambridge & Peterborough peak time extras. Maybe an altenrative would be a unified fleet of 110mph capable 387s?

I agree with your comment BUT think Southern have a damn cheek trying to market Gatwick Express as a premium brand if this is correct:

Pay lots more to use EXACTLY the same trains (ecxcept for the exterior livery) - they are having a damn laugh!<(

I believe they are having a spec suited to Gatex. Thats what we're told anyway. Including Wifi.

Yeh I bet the Standard class seats are the same type though, I had a trip on a 377/6 for the fist time on Saturday, good leg room but I did find the seats uncomfortable initially but then got used to them, which I find is usually the case with seats which are very firm.

Have the door buttons fallen off yet?

Or have Bombardier managed to find a way to keep them on (unlike some of the 379s)

The 387/1 are design for Airport travellers too folks.

Bad wording I think the option for 32 carriages not trains, giving the max specified number for the follow on order

Sources within Derby spoke of another order for Electrostars post the optional 35 units in the Southern order (27 of which are now the 387/2 fleet).

107/108 require exams prior to acceptance to Southern fleet. 105/106 took around two weeks from delivery to now.

My view is the Rail Engineer article is badly worded, its been stated elsewhere that the Gatwick order is 108 carriages 27 trains with an option for an additional 32 carriages 8 trains. Taking the number up to the max follow on order option of 140 carriages.

I know there is speculation of a possible additional final order for 387's by an unknown purchaser but I don't think this article is referring to that.

Those small tables seem to be second hand. Wonder where they came from?!

There was something in a recent Network Rail RUS that they are looking at the metro 377s getting a higher density.

The Sussex 'route study', published last month.

However is that really best described as 'higher density' - or is it the lower density seating with higher standing capacity - which allows for 4 passengers per sq metre, generally achieved by removal of seats and large standback areas? (The same idea as SWT 455s and 456s basically.)

Prior to infrastructure alterations or significant additional rolling
stock procurement the most obvious mitigation that could be
implemented to ease crowding density would be alterations to the
seating configurations of Class 377/455 stock operating on the
route to permit a higher total capacity for each vehicle.

If it was ever true that a 378 was successfully tested to Moorgate on the Northern City Line, thus killing the myth that the tunnels are too small for full size trains, could GTR not make it nice and easy to get the 313s replaced by just ordering more for use there? Like the GatEx trains, the interior spec would be different again - quite likely more like the S8s - and of course fixed at 6-cars.

I assume that's possible?

Or would such a replacement require a new tendering process? If that was the case, I think the best train would be one with open gangways. Indeed, something more akin to the S-Stock design. But I assume that a run-on order couldn't be changed that significantly without someone saying it had to be a new tender?

Would need a new Tender and I imagine Bombardier will be offering an Aventra version, Siemens Desiro City, Hitachi AT100 etc. all no doubt with open gangways, although given that all GTR's new trains will either be Bombardier or Siemens possibly one of those two might be a more likely winner.

Delay to 387 introduction is minor.

It requires a new tendering process that's been started.

Caped UFN.

Little birdie told me Monday will be the debut as the debut yesterday was cancelled due to more testing being needed, exactly what this is I have no idea.

Still fingers cross one will escape and be in passenger service....
