The Southern Electric Group suggests that these might be replacing Southern's 455s - apparently GTR have said (according to the Group magazine 'Live Rail') that there will be (a) more 10 car suburban workings and (b) less use of older 455 units circa 2018.

More 10 car will probably be done with the surplus 3car 377/3 and 4 car 377s that are no longer needed on the BML when some services swap to 700s.
I.e. 3 car + 3 car + 4 car like a number of the current 10 car services are.

Far cheaper than new stock.
The proposed reduction in 455 is only about 1/3 of the southern fleet which happens to be roughly the number that could be replaced by surplus 377/3.

The reduction in peak of 455 use is achieved by using more 377s to create 10 cars. There are 377/3s current running services in peak to East Grinstead and Horsham that are freed up by the 700 introduction. These 3 cars along with 4 car units will allow more Metro routes to be of maximum 10 car lengths leaving 455s to serve stations via Tulse Hill.

Sorry didn't see hlw reply when posting mine.

EDIT:

Seems 108 387 carriages have been ordered. This matches the announced GatEx order.

EDIT 2:

387104 is now on route to Bletchley. This is the 5th unit to be deliveried.

EDIT 3:

Nice line up shot of the 387s there, although that thumbnail of the proposed new Gatwick Express livery looks...well...odd!

I'm still slightly annoyed that they didn't use the 378/172 light cluster to add a bit of variety to the fleet :-x:lol::lol:

Your average Sussex/Surrey/London/Herts/Beds commuter couldn't/wouldn't give a monkeys about the light clusters! To them, a train is just a train.

Indeed. In fact, If I was MD of Southern, I might mess about with them and give them a 313 to Brighton, a 73 and a few borrowed mk3's to Sutton and a 442 to East Grinstead! Then we'll see if a train is just a train <D<D

Ooh nice :)

Have we any gen on when they start entering service? I can't honestly remember if it was mentioned recently or not. Starting on Thameslink services correct?

There hoping for some to start in December, and yes they will be going to Thameslink first before moving elsewhere when the 700s come in.

Basically identical to DB Regio colours, no? I'd expect DB might object, though?

387108 now on route to Bletchley.

What's Bletchley doing with them? I guess doing work under contract as LM and SE are both Govia TOCs?

First unit in service this month.

Bletchley is the commissioning depot. LM & SE have nothing to do at all with the commissioning as its Freightliner doing all the testing. Bletchley is used so 110mph testing can be done and there is space for the fleet.

EDIT:

Units ran the following today

5B89 08+37 Bletchley CS to WM 830 & 934 (signals - Willesden)
5Z85 10+33 WM 830 & 934 (signals - Willesden) to Crewe
5Z86 14+52 Crewe to Bletchley CS

Slightly unrelated, but does anyone know whether the 700s will be tested down the BML or coastways

Initially Three Bridges to (say) West Hampstead - then towards Bedford. NO plans to use them on the Coastways from Brighton to Eastbourne , towards Southampton.

GN plans to be worked out in due course.

Plan is overnight from Three Bridges depot to Bedford from September 2015. All class 700 will be commissioned from Three Bridges depot.

The 700s will be tested down West Coastway at some point after 2016.

There is a plan to use class 700 on West Coastway from Preston Park to Littlehampton. This confirmation has come separately from DfT and GTR. The 700s will be cleared on East Coastway to at least Lewes.

GN testing will start in September 2016 with units transferring from Three Bridges to Hornsey depot. Hornsey will host all units while they tested on ATO on the Hertford Loop.

Thanks

Presumably the clearance of the 700s to Lewes is to allow diversions via Lewes in case of disruption or engineering works

Yes, although things may change.

The 700 fleet will also be cleared via Clapham Junction to Victoria. Tho this is better placed in the 700 thread.

EDIT:

387/1 run to Brighton now taking place

5B89 0931 Bletchley C.S. to Brighton, 30L at Tring

Picture of 106 is brilliant, could see that in a mag.

+1 to that.

Can't see what's in for tomorrow yet, although there is a 5B89 13+13 Brighton to Willesden WM 830/934 (but I suspect a different path will be used, probably to Bletchley direct).

This morning when I checked on RTT, today's return path was that but it later changed.

What's that tiny white light for just to the right of the coupler?
