How about 387s for the Village stations to start off with due to SDO requirements plus Cambridge Cruiser services?

My understanding pre christmas the 387s will replace the 317&321s on a like for like.

After Christmas who knows. But the 317s and 321s need to be gone by December so if you travel to work on either unit type get used to standing.

Sorry to interrupt the discussion, but I was wondering if anyone knows if these are running from KGX this evening? I have tried to read pages back in the thread but if it's there I'm sorry it seems to have been buried. I passed one heading up through Stevenage a few minutes ago. Thanks.

It should be the 16:53 Kings Cross to Cambridge service. (normally platform 10 or 11)

Saw one going north past New Southgate at 08:34 on the slow line today. (didn't see if it was ECS)

The 08:35 New Southgate (WGC to Kings Cross) is normally a 8 coach 321/317

Yes, saw it the night before last heading off to Cambridge.

I note that the one of the morning PBO-KGX services is now a 321 rather than a 317. Is this related?

Maybe. It's a 321 that was replaced by the 387 wasn't it? So that could be used where a 317 was before.

What's the time that this service leaves Peterborough?

It's the 07:06, I think. 07:44 from Biggleswade.

Yes, that used to be a 321. It's normally my mental alert, while waiting at Hitchin, to look up and see how many minutes the Peterborough train is delayed by tonight ;)

Maybe it is a swap. The early morning 0550ish Peterborough- kings cross is normally a 317 now vice a 365 or 321.

1653 Cambridge service was anything Hornsey could throw at it. 317 / 321 mostly with 365s thrown in. Can't say if the 317 showed up more than the bin.

Hopefully the are moving things around to keep the 387s off the busy services.

Presumably until they have enough 387s to start running longer trains?

I was meaning the fact 387s are low capacity units.

Four car - seats
Class 317 - 270
Class 321 - 271
Class 365 - 244
Class 387 - 226

We have already seen the overcrowding on the 1653 as a result of the reduction of 44 seats. Imagine the overcrowding on services already crush loaded? I wonder if diagrams will be moved to ensure 365s cover these train as at least the standing room is better.

Hence my remark about running longer trains. The 387s will be able to use SDO which should compensate for the reduction in seats per unit.

If 4 car trains become 8 car then that's a substantial increase in room. Vital for trains serving Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City etc on a Sunday.

They can, but will they really run 12 car trains on services stopping at 8 coach platforms? I don't think so. So all we can hope is the 365s take over the busy services.

It doesn't help that the class 387 isn't really laid out well for standing.

The class 365 achieves a much better compromise with a spacious interior whilst at the same time providing comfortable seating (unlike the class 700!).

I do not see why running a 12 coach train to 8 coach platforms would be a problem. As long as the passengers in the last 4 coaches are informed that they have to move to the 8th to 1st coach cars to get off the train at the next station prior to the train stopping. This would be done in the same way that the London Overground class 378 trains do on some of their routes were they are 5 coach trains, stopping at some stations that can only allow doors for the first 4 coaches to open.

However, I have no doubt that only 8 coach trains will be run though.

Don't disagree, but the dwell times would significantly increase. Knebworth, Welwyn North, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield all impacted. Not sure if it would foul points as well. I can't see it happening but 2x 365 isn't a bad alternative to be honest.

It doesn't seem like any other operator has expressed interest in the 365s since after GWR changed their plans.

387119 doing the honours this evening.

By the time I caught the return working heading in Kings Cross from Finsbury Park (having dashed over from Paddington to catch their 387s), it had been swapped for a 317. I guess it was swapped at Cambridge.

Another key performance risk, is passengers operating the emergency alarm and causing delay while tbe train comes to a stand again. A decade or so ago I was involved in appraisal of a proposal for SDO elsewhere and this was felt to be a significant risk, even with one full carriage and the next door.

Anyone travelling on a 700 or 387 could try an experiment. Wait until 15 seconds into a dwell (enough time for someone with headphones to notice they've stopped at a station) and then walk four carriages through the train. This takes me about 45 seconds walking briskly along a platform next to the train, let alone through the aisle and corridor connections with all the potential obstales as you pass through...

You'd hope the 387s could make it perfectly clear on board that some coaches aren't usable for certain stations, but I realise passengers can be idiots at times and not listen.

No reason not to have the message scrolling near constantly, along with stopping info etc. Heck, you could even give the message in some other languages too - which Gatwick Express seems to manage.

It would require the PIS to always be used though, so on second thoughts...

Travelling on SDO services they do, but you still get passengers upon arriving think which coach am i in. (Clue on the PIS). On this line realising upon leaving WGC they need to move back for Welwyn north.

The other thing in the hoarding direction. More people will choose the last door on the platform to get a seat slowing down boarding.
