Hi all, I've just gotten on a 387 to London Paddington, and there was a random 'beep' and I'm trying to figure out what it meant, any ideas?

Great Britain and India

SignalMeaning in Great Britain[1]Meaning in India[2]
1StopStop train
1—1Zone of speed restriction over, resume prescribed speed
1—2Close doors
2Ready to startStart train
2—2Do not open doorsPassing automatic signal at 'on'
3Set BackGuard required by driver
3—1Lock central door locking
3—2—1Testing doors
3—3Guard required by driver, or guard or driver to speak on the telephoneGuard's warning when the motorman exceeds the speed prescribed
3—3—1Release central door locking
4Slow downProtect train in rear
5Driver/Guard leaving the train
6Draw forward
9Police assistance required
All codes, except 3—2—1, must be acknowledged by repeating the code received.
Although I’ve observed that historically, when I was going to school in the 1970s, the 2 was never acknowledged.

Otherwise, the random beeps tend to be along the lines of “I’m in the toilet and I’m confused and there’s a big red button”

There are a few codes missing from that list.

1 = Stop
1-2 = Close Doors (Power Doors)
2 = Ready To Start
2-1 = Token Received (RETB Lines)
2-2 = Do Not Open Doors
3 = Set Back
3-1 = Lock Central Door Locking (Slam Doors)
3-2 = Release Doors (Power Doors)
3-2-1 = Testing Doors
3-3 = Driver Or Guard To Attend Telephone
3-3-1 = Release Central Door Locking (Slam Doors)
4 = Slow Down
5 = Driver Or Guard Leaving The Train
6 = Draw Forward
9 = Police Assistance Required

Anyway i do not think the beep referred to is a driver guard beep. The 387s use a bell sound. It is a proper old fashioned traditional bell both in the saloon and the cabs. The 387s do not have any beeps for this. So whatever the beeping was is something different.

Ah thank you both, it was definitely not a stop beep so I am unsure of what it was
Where exactly were you sitting? Was in behind the cab or further away or in another carriage? When did the beep play? For example was it when stationary at the station or when departing or arriving or whist the train was on the move between stations? This may help us identify exactly what the beep was. If you were sitting behind the cab then it could have been something from in there. For example it could have simply been the driver vigilance alarm or it could have been the MITRAC train management system indicating a fault. There are many things it could be.

387's always depart Paddington DOO so it won't be a bell code, plus the 387's have bells and not buzzers.

I'm pretty sure every time the DDS is moved from neutral to Forward/Reverse a beep sounds, the fault alarm sounds like the DSD beeps so could be that, GSM-R beeps once logged in, other than that, can't think of much else

That does sound like it, but the only thing I would have to say to that is I was in the middle of the train, and that I doubt the driver would be changing directions going 100 mph xD

Could it have been someone's mobile phone or similar device?

Definitely not a phone beep

The GSMR can provide a constant beeping through the PA system to test continuity throughout the train and is one of the steps of fault finding either a Cab communications fault, so it might have been that
