Strange world when a unit that did not feel worn out at all meets it's end. Especially when other life expired units are running on the network using electric power. The 319 and 321 come to mind. It would be a shame if a number are not saved for preservation and given a long-term future

I think three carriages is very good going and certainly better than I was expecting (which was one driving motor at most).Strange world when a unit that did not feel worn out at all meets it's end. Maybe trying to send two together, two more moves to go now.Whilst (11th) Friday's is cancelled owing to brakes problems.
That’s going to upset people who were somehow convinced 525 had a future. I was never convinced it was to be an ’NR test train’, always far more likely it was just a ‘first of class’ trials fit for 365s…STP 15/03 1145 Bicester MoD - Newport Docks
Which means that 524 (DMOC A and TSO) and 540 (DMOC B) are the only one left in the UK (which I know they're in preservation at EKR)I know right, 525 was the chance for us to keep it alive, but it was too late now.
506 & 536 live on as well (although probably very short term) as their moved to Newport on Friday was cancelledWhich means that 524 (DMOC A and TSO) and 540 (DMOC B) are the only one left in the UK (which I know they're in preservation at EKR)
Sorry to be pedantic, but unless the scrap remains being shipped abroad counts, "the only one left" would have sufficed.Which means that 524 (DMOC A and TSO) and 540 (DMOC B) are the only one left in the UK (which I know they're in preservation at EKR)
I've pointed out that 525 was most likely retained until the commercial contracts with Alstom was resolved. After removing the 365s from the East Cost routes, there was never any need to continue with the ETCS programme. That’s going to upset people who were somehow convinced 525 had a future. I was never convinced it was to be an ’NR test train’, always far more likely it was just a ‘first of class’ trials fit for 365s…
Because of space at EKR, so they put a 3 car instead of 4 carMay I ask, why did they specifically choose 2 carriages from 524 and 1 carriage from 540? Why these units?
Probably because as there’s no intention to run them it doesn’t matter. In my opinion they don’t really count as “preserved”, because they‘ll never really be a functional EMU again…May I ask, why did they specifically choose 2 carriages from 524 and 1 carriage from 540? Why these units?
By all accounts, I think it was supposed to be 524 only, but the scrap man was quick off the mark (they were taken by road from the scrap yard) and the rest of 524 started being processed before it could be removed.May I ask, why did they specifically choose 2 carriages from 524 and 1 carriage from 540? Why these units?
524 was deemed to be in the best condition, not sure about 540, although I think some rumours circulated about it being the last unit out of York.May I ask, why did they specifically choose 2 carriages from 524 and 1 carriage from 540? Why these units?
At least they will end up more "preserved" than the three Class 332 carriages now located at Goole and not for public use.Probably because as there’s no intention to run them it doesn’t matter. In my opinion they don’t really count as “preserved”, because they‘ll never really be a functional EMU again…
There is an article in the Railway Magazine this month which talks through the story in some detail.May I ask, why did they specifically choose 2 carriages from 524 and 1 carriage from 540? Why these units?
and now, 530 went to scrap the following monthThere is an article in the Railway Magazine this month which talks through the story in some detail.
As others have said, the original plan was to preserve 2 cars from 524, which then became 3 cars. They couldn't all be from the same unit due to the limited space at Newport for getting them onto a low loader - sounds like it just wasn't logistically feasible.
So they planned to get the second Driving Car from 530, but then on the day due to a fault with 530, 540 was sent in its place to Newport - so finally 2 cars ex 524 & 1 car ex 540.
Yep.Oh; so East Kent Railway has received two driving cars?
