Class 350/2s to replace 323s on Northern

I do think it is the right choice, but one unit failure is hardly evidence that a class needs replacing...
Unfortunately it’s not just this one failure though. It’s practically daily that one of the 323s fails in or prior to service. There’s a myriad of cancellations and short formations today as a result of a lack of serviceable 323s. I don’t want to turn this into a 323 reliability thread however…

I assume one issue with the 323's is that they are a somewhat one off design and as such probably don't share a lot of traction parts with other stuff, though I do see that the traction converters were replaced with Alstom ones so they should be somewhat generic (if potentially subject to Alstom reliability levels!)

I feel mentalities must have changed. I've seen many a 323 recently where people are choosing to stand and block doorways, not allowing others on, when there's been plenty of free seats.
That’s not necessarily got anything to do with a desire for personal space - potentially more a realisation that on a crowded train you stand more chance of making your connection if you’re standing by the door than sat halfway down the carriage. Not excusing it, merely explaining. If I’m only going to be on a train for 5 - 6 minutes, I usually do the same - though admittedly making sure I don’t block the exit or gangway.

Wild speculation on my part and I am sure that someone with far more knowledge is going to tell me why it can't be done.. but here goes: -
37 350/2 4 car units; could the TC vehicle (after being converted to all standard class) be removed from 19 of the units and added to 18 units to make
18 - 5 car trains? - leaving 19 units as 3 car units.

why would they do that? the 3 cars would be equivalent to about a 2 and a half coach 323 capacity wise- useful to no-one.

Looks like there a 331 covering a diagram on the stokes today. Not sure on any other short forms because of 323s being out of action.

450s used to have SDO but SWT had that ripped out and replaced with ASDO.

The SWT ASDO training video was uploaded to Youtube 8 years ago, and here is a link to it.
I don’t think that’s correct. The SWT trains went from the original Unit Deselect (aka UDS) ie front 4 of 8, 8 of 12, 4 of 12, 5 from 10, straight to an ASDO system, which work also involved fitting track beacons to nearly all their stations. The ASDO is used for the whole of a service, not just short platforms.

I also doubt there was very much to ‘rip out’ as all UDS had to do was to break the door control links along the train at the cab the guard operated it from.

There’s a 150/2 covering a 331/1 on an Alderley Edge diagram today with the 331 on Blackpools instead.

There are 25 Weekday class 323 diagrams to be covered out of a pool of 34 units - today they are 5 short of that with only 20 units out in service. 20/34 is an appalling availability rate

So which 323s are out of service waiting parts.
At least 323218,229 & 242 are long term out of use.

Short answer. No.

If the 323's are to be replaced by the 350/2's shortly you might have thought that the 9 323's stored at Long Marston would be cannibalised/stripped for spares which could help in certain spares availability...unless there's an ogoing user for some 323's?

Also understand that 331028 is due back to AN this week from its helping hand at NL.

it's more that those 9 aren't leased by Northern, so they cant utilise or cannibalise them easily. Not to say it's impossible however.

Agree, but as Porterbrook is involved both with the 323 & 350/2 fleets, perhaps 'a deal within a deal' to assist should be done!

It annoys me that the Sprinters are set to outlive the 323s - that shouldn't be the case.
I don't think it is what Northern wanted tbf, I mean they did spend a lot of time and money training up Blackpool (and Wigan crews) on 323s.

Northern had planned for the 150s/155s/156s to be replaced by the new fleet before the 323s were replaced, but that can't happen due to the 323 s reach the end of their service lives earlier than Northern had planned.

I'm told that it was spoken about, however it won't solve the transformer issues as they still need to source a part which by sound of it is also difficult to get.

Not great, hopefully 323212 issues yesterday weren't serious and it's back out in traffic ASAP

Hearing the word 'refresh' in relation to Northern rolling stock doesn't fill me with hope - surely they'll come out looking better than "refurbished" 15x?

The 350s are welcome, mind.

323s aren't wildly newer than 158s to be fair (1992 vs 1994). They just look really modern due to what at the time was almost space age styling.

That comment was more pointed at the 150s that more generally interwork with 323s.
158s are about where I'd say the baseline is for things that can get away with still being in service!

Rather a lot of people in Northern aren't particularly pleased with the decision as I understand it. Primarily the reason is because the leasing company is has managed to successfully lobby the department that someone should be paying for them instead of them being off lease.

However it will probably be good for the passenger (especially on weeks like the last thanks to the air con). Unless it leads to some 3+3 services being replaced by 4s, but it's a significant increase in carriages overall (34*3=102 to 37*4=148) so I can't see that happening, I hope to see much fewer 3 car 331s solo (working in 6 car formations), or 8 car 350 services (even better).

Tell me you don't know much about the rolling stock market without telling me you don't know much about the rolling stock market...
Here's a fun fact... the Franco-Swiss cross-border Léman Express network shares Alstom and Stadler trains as well as SNCF and SBB drivers, which drive both train types on a random basis. Guess which trains the drivers always hope they'll get assigned to when starting their shift... if even the Swiss say it... ;) ;) ;)

Plenty of passengers who use Northern are not best pleased with the operator........west side gives up at the slightest sign of sunshine, joke timetables on a Sunday, 769 reliability leads to cancellation/short-formed rates worst for years on certain routes- the 'new operations manager' apparently seriously tried to say that the 'temporary new Sunday tt introduced' on the west side in Dec 24 (yes, that long ago) was a benefit in that journey plans were 'more certain' and cancellations were down - one hell of a strange interpretation of statistics where gaps of anywhere between 2 and 6 hours are in place.

If that’s all they can say then it’s an admission of the company’s failure. It is, however, also true. Far better to know there’s going to be a 6 hour gap than get somewhere only to discover just as the train disappears that the next one’s going to be in 6 hours’ time.

Just realised that no more 323s and 350s already having UDS (or having SDO fitted) means the short platforms at Kearsley, Farnworth, Moses Gate, and (to a far lesser degree) Clifton are no longer problems to running longer trains on a possible future Stalybridge - Bolton - Wigan North Western service, although the recently extended platforms are also not long enough (except Hindley P2) for an 8 car 350 at 160 metres.

Would a Stalybridge to Wigan service need much more than a 4 car? You’re somewhat restricted at Stalybridge by the length of the bay platform.

Agree, but it still happens, on the temporary timetable the gaps that in theory are 2 hours but on the day become 4 or 6 hours when the rostered conductor, on Sunday working which is still outside the working week, either goes sick or... for 'another' reason isn't present.

I can understand that to an extent, but what would the alternative decision be? Not taking on the 350s now won't make it any faster to replace the Sprinters!

The whole thing is a false dichotomy. Both fleets need modernisation, and both are getting it. The critical difference is that the replacement diesel/battery/multimode/bionic duckweed stock doesn't yet exist so something new has to be developed, making the process take longer. Meanwhile a fleet of relatively modern, highly reliable electric trains of roughly the right quantity and spec to replace the increasingly dated 323s is already available, so can be brought into service sooner.

The commercial side of this deal is baffling.
The 350/2s were replaced at WMT (by 730s) because they were originally leased at the high end of the cycle in the 2000s, while Aventra/Civity fleets were much cheaper to lease in the 2010s (hence the mass fleet replacements in the last decade).
The other 350s (/1, /3 and /4) also had DfT lengthy usage guarantees attached so could not be sent off lease, unlike the 350/2s.

So the builders/funders of the 350/2s took a haircut on them since leaving WMT and have not earned revenue from the fleet for several years.
We will never know how much Northern will be paying for the fleet lease - presumably it will be competitive with new fleet lease costs today rather than the old WMT contract.
Maybe the possibility of future leases from Siemens is also playing a part to sugar the deal.
It's the risk the private sector takes in the rolling stock business.

I also find it hard to believe that the GBR future has not played a part in the deal.
Who knows what mix of services and rolling stock will apply in the north in a year or two.
Northern will be operating EMUs over the Pennines before long, at least.

Most people won't have to endure them more than 3x a week anyway thanks to modern-day hybrid working patterns.
