If Siemens were that worried about CAF getting a foothold in the UK market, then they wouldn't have worked with them to start with.
Its only the bodyshell and probably a Siemens design, I doubt Siemens are too worried, CAF are just a subcontractor.

Still a bit weird, as the visible part, the bodyshell, wasn't something Siemens themselves made, so if anything it's promoting one of their main UK rivals CAF!

Indeed arguably a 332 unit would make more sense outside the CAF factory in Newport, seeing that it was CAF's big breakthrough in the UK. Siemens have been in the UK since Victorian times

Indeed, their first patents were registered in London and they provided the electric street lighting in Godalming - the first in the UK I believe in 1882. In fact, they've got a very interesting history in the UK thanks to Sir Carl Wilhelm Siemens.

How is this any different to - for example - manufacturers of bus chassis showcasing their chassis model in conjunction with WrightBus, despite the fact that WrightBus also build integral buses?

It isn't as Siemens regards what is inside as more valuable

332s were Siemens (and predecessors) first UK rail product since LBSCR electrification pre WW1.

When the 332s were built Siemens couldn't build MU or coach bodies and had only just acquired the ability to build whole locomotives (they traditional partnered with Kraus-Maffei for the loco body shells and final assembly, they bought Kraus-Maffei and with it the Tank-like build quality!). The MU body shell and final assembly capacity was developed soon after developed by buying several tram factories (Vienna and Krefeld) and repurposed them.

Agreed - Siemens AG of Munich and Manchester as they traded in Victorian times.

Are they going to use them for interior demonstrators or anything? If it's just effectively an ornament at the entrance a driving car on its own would do the job,.
It'll all come to light in time but it's basically for training use.

Reports suggest that the coach with the pantograph isn't one of the three coaches being plinthed.
Not sure who these reports are from but it's incorrect. The DSC is being disposed of. The STD is key for training purposes.

Can you explain the acronyms please.

DSC is Driver Standard Composite. This designation is from when half the vehicle was without seats to accommodate checked luggage.

STD is Standard (T) Disabled.

Not actually sure on the T as I can't find where it's specified. Could be Toilet or Trailer but given that none of the other vehicles are designated as motor or trailer I'd be surprised if it's trailer (DS, OS, STD, [OS in 5-car], DSC). Also it has the D for the universal access toilet already in it. There is a cubicle that could have been used to accommodate a trolley (subsequently used for on board staff equipment) but I'm unsure!

L (lavatory) is usually used to denote a toilet, is it not?

There’s manufacturers designations, and railway database designations, and public stock book designations and they aren’t necessarily the same. For example the “Platform 5“ rolling stock book’s author attempts to standardise his codes, but they aren’t always the same as what is labelled on the actual vehicles.

Siemens/HEx (and latterly GWR) used the actual coach designations, rather than the platform end ones.

DSC - Driving Saloon Convertible
OS - Open Saloon
STD - Saloon Toilet Disabled
DS - Driving Saloon

The “Convertible” refers to the former capability to use part of the saloon for checked luggage that had been early-checked in at Paddington when that facility was available.

The STD car was the one that was pantograph fitted, and only the driving cars were motored. The 5 cars had 2x OS cars, OS1 and OS2, I forget which was next to the DSC.

That’ll be the final pair off to meet their maker. Going to be strange going past the OOC HEX depot and seeing it empty....

Three vehicles from 332001 (78400, 72412 and 63400) are now at Goole. I've seen somewhere (but can't put my hands on it currently) a photo of the remaining car (78401) heading by road for Peterborough, so presumably the same scrapyard that took 332014.

There was a photo of 78401 on the WNXX news page yesterday.

It will be even more strange when it has been demolished. It does seem like it will be empty at the end of this upcoming week.

No, 78401 is the driving carriage that is going for scrap. One driving carriage and two centre cars going to Goole.

No, driving car and two centre cars. It's the other driving car which has gone (presumably) for scrap.

They may as well have had the whole unit!

Next week the class will no longer exist on NR or preserved rails. Which was the last class, loco or unit, where this happened?

Are there any Class 312 vehicles still in existence?

There's a Class 312 driving car and carriage at the Colne Valley Railway. They got them from the now closed Electric Railway Museum in Coventry (a place I regret not getting around to visit...)

On AC EMUs, Classes 304 (2000), 305 (2002) and 310 (2007) are all extinct.
I suppose the exception here is that vehicles will at least survive, for now.

But with a whole unit there’d be a danger of cascade proposals continuing forever in rail forums, not a good thing... :D

I'm sure the remaining three vehicles could be paired with an adapted driving car from (insert unit of your choice here)!

Anyone know which driving vehicle from 001 has been saved (78400 or 78401), and could confirm the date and destination (presumably, Sims / Newport) of the remainder of 001 and also date#/ destination for 014, many thanks.
I'm told 78401 has gone to Sims Peterborough. Rest of set is at Goole.
