Am I right in thinking that all of the ones that have already gone for scrap were those in the worst conditions?
That would make sense.
There is very little difference in them, condition-wise. They have all been looked after very well and maintained in comparable condition. Unlike the 317's for example, they have always had thorough body overhauls to keep them in great nick without terrible corrosion.

The scrap criteria has been based on whether PRM compliant (i.e. not PRM compliant) and when due in the overhaul cycle.

Unfortunately this has meant the Clacton 'celebrity' units have gone for scrap :(

Thanks for that, it's good to know they've been well looked after.

Celebrity units? What were these?
Clacton celebrity was in inverted comma's... (Only of local celebrity/relevance to Clacton Depot).
321346 and 321424

Another particularly 'notable' unit that's already been scrapped (this one not to Clacton, more generally notable) is 321361 "Phoenix".

Update further 321343 and 321423 are back in service as off Monday the 17th may 2021 from warm store a very reliable source off mine has shown me pictures off these in service on the southminster branch on this date.
Also 321441 and 321409 was noted as well on the clacton on sea and Ipswich services respectively. Back from warm store.

424 hasn't gone to scrap. It is still running.

Are non-PRM 321s still all going to be out of service on 31st May?

If so, will the 31st May be the last full service day ie: all units allowed to be in service until 23:59 on the 31st?

or

Does the dispensation expire 00:00 on the 31st May with the previous day being the last full day in service?

Thanks. :D

I'd imagine that it will be extended otherwise there will be a lot of four car trains. If anything some have come back from store recently.

Expiry is at 2359 on the given date, having just checked a sample of GA letters on DfT’s site.

Maybe, we shall see! Although if they've not sorted it out by now, they are leaving it last minute or there might not be another extension.

Could GA get round it by attaching at least one PRM 321 to a non PRM 321? to avoid a severe shortage - unless a mass influx of 720's is due? Could be a logisitical nightmare but a way to ensure every train is PRM compliant.

True, I mean northern have done it before with some of their units, so a similar arrangement on GA could occur if required.

I think I read elsewhere that the deadline for the non PRM 321s to be withdrawn by had been postponed again, but I'm not sure how long for.

You cannot "get round it". What might be agreed is a dispensation that allows non-PRM 321s to remain in service, but only if working with a Renatus, 321/9 or 322 set.

all of the (several) 321/9 and 322s i have travelled in recently have had the UAT out of order, seemingly medium term, so if i were the DfT I'd only allow it with Renatus sets.

Apologies if i’ve missed something but is are the non PRM 321s being withdrawn at the end of May or have they been granted a bit more time?

It appears they have been extended and will have to be coupled to a PRM 321 in service. Not sure how long the extension is.
