It is somewhat irritating that GTR were straight in announcing replacement of the GN 313s, but have apparently forgotten about the plague of them on the coastway services..

the southern 313s went through a decent refurbishment and internally are in good nick. They are easily adequate for Brighton to seaford/Eastbourne/Littlehampton/Bognor services. Any further afield than that and they are a bit of an issue with no toilet and hard seating. This is a problem that should be dealt with.

Once again another mystery why the dft did not specify a way to solve this.

The 455s will possibly need replacing in the next "franchise" so I can see a new stock order to replace the 313 and 455s

IMHO anything further than Brighton - Seaford or West Worthing needs something more than a 313. Using them on the Brighton-Pompeys, with almost a 1h30 journey time, is absolutely ridiculous, especially given that they replaced far superior stock. Moving unallocated 319s to the coast would, as has been mentioned previously, seem to be an ideal solution. The added capacity of a fourth car would also come in dead handy on the Portsmouth services.

Are 313s allocated to Brighton-Pompeys? I thought the longest run they normally do is Littlehampton - Pompey of just under an hour. There is also the daily Brighton - Hastings run at about 1h30 duration.

without putting my maths hat on and also having more concrete information about where most of the 319s will eventually end up, im not sure there would be 19 spare 319s anyway.

Im sure Northern rail are getting more than the original allocation....not sure how long LM and SE have got their 319s for..... and i guess the TL ones wont be fully replaced for a couple of years or so until enough 700s are delivered. Im sure we will hear soon enough where the remaining ones will go.....having spare stock lying around is not the done thing!... then again we dont know whats gonna happen to the 19x442s yet!

Northern and LM both have 319s leased until next April when both the franchises currently end, I'm not sure on the Southeastern/Southern arrangement. There's actually no requirement for the next Northern franchise winner to lease 319s but initially I don't think they'll be any other options.

Well I had the experience of a 313 both ways between Brighton & Portsmouth yesterday & what a rattling rough journey that was, at least a 142 in the north has comfier seats but there seems little to choose between them :(

The 142s in the North have 3 types of seating. I didn't think train seating worse than the Merseytravel interior type has ever been produced.

The planned 313 operated services are shown in the public timetable with a triangle symbol to denote lack of toilets. They aren't all day on Brighton - Portsmouth, but there are definitely a few.

However, this discussion has been had a few times before, so do we really need to do it again in a thread about 319s to Southeastern? :D

The majority of Brighton - Pompey services are 313, although on the odd occasion a 377/3 escapes from the Metro area and takes over a diagram.

Could the coaches with the pantographs of the 313s be swapped into a 455, replacing a normal trailer coach on a 455?

I don't see how that question is at all relevant when we are talking about transferring Class 319 units to an operator in the third-rail region. Especially seeing as they have no prior experience of the Class 455.

But sure, you could insert a Class 313 PTSO into anything if you throw enough money at it.
