Earlier today I saw some pictures on Facebook of a 317 on test at witham. Unfortunately I’ve lost the past but what could they be doing this Far East? Could the prm ones be used to replace non compliant 321’s or driver training?

As you said it’s on a test run, probably after repairs at IlfordEarlier today I saw some pictures on Facebook of a 317 on test at witham. Unfortunately I’ve lost the past but what could they be doing this Far East? Could the prm ones be used to replace non compliant 321’s or driver training?
There is a regular test trip from Ilford to Witham and back that frequently sees 317s off repair being given a run before being returned to traffic.
Ah ok that explains whyAs you said it’s on a test run, probably after repairs at Ilford

Before COVID, I'm sure there used to be a few peak time 317s on the GEML to Witham. Not sure if they went further East as it has been such a long time ago I've totally forgot.Earlier today I saw some pictures on Facebook of a 317 on test at witham. Liverpool St Anglia drivers signed them as had booked work to Harwich on Saturdays. They occasionally got put on their diagrams when short of IC sets.Back in National Express days some went all the way to Norwich
Sometimes it's a mixed 317+321 pair. There is a regular test trip from Ilford to Witham and back that frequently sees 317s off repair being given a run before being returned to traffic.
The infamous 0630/1130/1630 diagram used to chuck out 317s many years ago. For a while the 1702 LST-Norwich was 317s until the former Stansted 317s were stood down.Liverpool St Anglia drivers signed them as had booked work to Harwich on Saturdays. I believe they used the 317/7s for a short while on the 17:02 ex LST and 19:30 return. The /7s were also used on the 08:12 from Stowmarket.Back in National Express days some went all the way to Norwich
A Google search throws up a few photos of 317s at Ipswich in 1999 at various times of day including a 317+322 pair on the 16:40 up. Just before the loco hauled service went half hourly they hired in WAGN 317s to run extra off peak trains to Ipswich departing Liverpool Street at XX:50. I did those a couple of times. They connected nicely at Colchester with the 312 to Walton on the Naze.I believe they used the 317/7s for a short while on the 17:02 ex LST and 19:30 return. The /7s were also used on the 08:12 from Stowmarket.
Anglia Railways used a 317 for the 18:xx to Norwich and it returned 05:05 the following morning. Along with the 322s (sometimes paired with a 322) they were used for the Norwich services during the summer of 1999 while awaiting the arrival of the 170s.
Was the 18:42 Norwich which was added by AR to revenue raid on peak traffic to Chelmsford & lasted a timetable or two before being replaced by an IC set. At the time Norwich departures where at 18:00, 18:27, 18:30, 18:42 & 19:00. Quite amazing really.I believe they used the 317/7s for a short while on the 17:02 ex LST and 19:30 return. Had trolley catering on those shuttles too. AR hired them in from WAGN outside the peak.A Google search throws up a few photos of 317s at Ipswich in 1999 at various times of day including a 317+322 pair on the 16:40 up.
