Only example I can think of (on occasion) Virgin West Coast operating 14/15 coach 'blockbusters' via the Chiltern route, usually formed at this length over Christmas periods.

What's the longest any passenger train can be before causing problems with signalling (mainly taking up two signalling sections at a time instead of one)?

I believe the number of "control computers" and for electric only the power supply limit the number of cars

I'm sure I've seen a picture of the cab of a 222 which had a panel for the SDO select- appeared to allow up to 14 car formations? Not that the MML could take a 322m formation, no stations that long!

SDO only opens up to 13 cars. Not as if thats any use as Pancras only holds 10. The coupling on the 7 cars is there purely for assistance purposes only.

It doesn't matter if a train takes up 2 signalling sections, in fact as they move from one onto the next they will be taking up 2.

At some locations (Portsmouth Harbour to Portsmouth & Southsea) the signals are that close together a 12 coach train can be occupying 2 signal sections and the overlap of the signal in rear, so effectively 3 signals.

Yes, mostly 5, however there are still a few 4 cars left. Seven car units are 222001-222006. 5 Cars range from 222007 to 222023, and finally 4 cars are 222101, 102, 103 and 104, that came from Hull trains.
