4 units out tomorrow...
Well, 1 in service and 3 on milage accumulation BUT it's better than what we've seen the past few weeks anyway
175009/175011/175113 on milage runs
175115 on diagram starting 2C05 EXD - PNZ
Good to see 115 entrusted with the key passenger diagram.
Mystery 115 was doing Newquay and finished passenger at Par to become 5P27 but dosen't appeared to have moved from Par and is not been on opentrains. Opentrains showing 7 cars in Par Chapel sidings that could be 150238, 232 and 175115.

I do hope they get them sorted. Only travelled on them twice (same day), when I took my late Dad to Llandudno. We did Man Picc to Llandudno return. I remember us both being very impressed as we compared them with other units around at the time.

I'd go as far as to say, IMHO, one of the better trains since privatisation....

175115 appears to have now gone into the siding at Par instead of going empty back to Laira. Also not showing for 2C05 tomorrow now.
Looks like 115 is going to operate 2C05 from Par now, assume something else might do the other bit from Exeter...

The thing is, it has to work, there is literally nothing else on the horizon. Some people will say about TfW 158's but they're a year away at least, they all need their air con replaced as it's basically non existent, along with various other refurbishment, new trains are probably 10 years away.

It would be interesting to know how much of the ‘economies’ of withdrawing short HSTs have been thrown away by the 175 fiasco.

Hopefully the painful lessons learnt from this will be applied to any TfW 158s gaining new owners and other subsequent cascades.

One of innumerable failures of the privatisation model which saw/sees stock owned by a third party go to poorly-managed storage rather than being transferred in a timely manner to the new operator. Time and time again it has been shown that storing stock is a poor option, yet it continues apace, with a lack of a strategic rolling stock plan.

Indeed. GW has already been burnt by the 769s, whilst other refurbishing fiascos were the 442s and 458s.

That’s nothing to do with who owns the stock and everything do with the dysfunctional DfT.

So little difference from GW’s existing 158s in that regard.
I'd disagree, whilst far from perfect, they're probably the best of the 158's still in service, I've probably had two sets over the past couple of months where all the air con has completely failed. The 166's on the other hand....

But we digress

The problem is that if the leasing companies know that the DFT has a use planned for surplus stock then there’s no incentive to offer a competitive lease. Presumably there was elements of this with the 379s.

Unfortunately this is where the whole leasing system isn’t fit for purpose.

But equally the situation on GWR is a complete mess, as clearly the HSTs were pulled before there was a viable replacement.

I know we’re digressing again, and by this point it’s probably worth spinning it out to a separate thread but my recent trips in Scotland had mixed results - Aircon on the excellent Inverness sets (701-725) worked perfectly and one was like a fridge, Aircon on the Corkerhill sets (726-741) very patchy with most not working.

Last trips on the GW 158s have been reasonably well with no complaints (other than their now general scruffiness due to being hard worked!).

Back to the topic though, how are the test runs / training runs / limited service runs looking today?

*Someone* is paying for storage of the 769/9s, so *someone* must think that they have a possible future *somewhere*. Of course, they might or might not be right ...

Again though, they've been stored for years now and would require return to service work

I don't know, but the 769/9s are owned by Porterbrook, the bulk of which are stored in Porterbrook's own facilities in Long Marston. Not sure what money changed hands when DfT contracted GWR to lease the 769/9s, but when DfT instructed GWR to abandon the plans for 769s on the North Downs lines the revenue stream presumably dried up. AIUI a pair of 769/9s went to Scotland for a period, and a pair have been based at Leicester off and on for use by a FOC. The only significant development was 769922 being stored in Stoke and one car catching fire - presume that is now scrap.

What was noticable was when Porterbrook decided to send the Northern 769s to Brodies for exam, they refitted to ex TfW diesel only 769s with pantographs, rather than send the stored 769/9s which I believe were already 25kV compatible.

I hear rumblings that some 175's have already been fitted with illuminated AWS sunflowers over the weekend.

That would make sense as 115 looks to be working the whole diagram today, and it also did the same on with yesterday.

006 also completed the full diagram on Newquay on Saturday too.

115 only to Plymouth then a 150 to complete diagram.

115 only to Plymouth running 20+ late, then a 150 to complete diagram.

The connecting train for Bristol has left on time. Do they taxi the passengers that wanted that train?

But it was still well after dark at Plymouth!

Reading between the lines (and I may be totally wrong) but the 175 was due to run back empty from Exeter to Plymouth, whilst 150232 was meant to run empty Par to Exeter, it is now due to run back empty as a 6 car formation which must be unit balancing, obviously you'd have issues trying to couple a 175 to a pair of 150's!

Yes, usually the 175 would work 5P28 back down to Laira after operating 2E28.

Two 150s normally also go down on 5P95, so as you say 232 must have been added to that formation tonight to get things where they need to be for tomorrow.

Actually the 175 sat down at Bodmin with an F and R fault. So it was replaced by the 150 at Plymouth as it was faulty (surprise surprise).

Indeed - the system, not the individuals involved. You can't just store stock for ages and expect not to incur needless costs and delays as a result (and I'm not just referring to the 175s).

Whilst I agree that the DfT has a lot to answer for, surely the ROSCO has to take some of the responsibility? They are the owner and should not be leasing stock in a state that is not suitable for operations.

Rather than just dump stock that they still wish to lease in a siding, they could have arranged regular trips as was the case for some other stored stock.

Amazingly, that was done when the 379s were stored at Worksop. They were taken over to Doncaster one or two at a time to juice up under the OLE, then returned to soggy old Worksop.

Totally agree about the 175s, and it was perfectly obvious that DfT would "rehire" them at some point, and due to their age they would definitely require an overhaul before their new contract.

With the benefit of hindsight just when were the AWS "sunflowers" going to be replaced ? Did it really need a GWR driver to report them ? Surely the Rosco have qualified staff to check their assets over periodically then feed up the command chain whether stuff needs attention.

I see a photo on FB dated 17th July for 175103 in it's new GWR livery. Guessing it is still at Wolverton.

That surely depends entirely on the nature of the issue. People coming to something new will react differently to it from people who have been used to somethings foibles over 20 years. Doesn’t make either position necessarily “right”.

103 and 110 are both now in the GWR livery as far as I am aware, but yes both still in Wolverton. The last move down was 004 to Exeter back in June.

Costs money. ROSCOs will cut costs to the bone. It would be interesting to know what requirements are placed upon them regarding storage and subsequent suitability for passenger service. Of course as stock becomes ever more 'computer-complex' and thus delicate, longer-term storage becomes correspondingly problematic. In days of yore, if you stored, say, a 4SUB, it would still work years later!

This is the problem with the whole “it’s the leasing company’s problem” view. Reality is this all ends up affecting the end-user, as we’ve seen in several cases not least GWR. The 379s haven’t exactly been plain sailing either.

And whether any money is changing hands until the trains are actually fit for service. If it is then someone should be looking for a new job.
